Refurbished Parking Meters Installed in Downtown Leesburg
Leesburg, VA (June 5, 2015) – Last week, the Town
replaced the parking meters in downtown. The meters
appear to be new, but they are actually refurbished
versions of the old meters.
The brown meter casings were sandblasted and
powdercoated black, the clear plastic domes were
replaced and stickers installed with the new hours, rates
and time limits. In addition, black pole sleeves were
placed over the existing brown poles. Previously, the
digital meters were reprogrammed with the new rates of
$1.50 per hour which went into effect in April.
“In total, sixty-one double meter casing and thirty-nine
single meter casings were refurbished,” said Kaj Dentler,
Leesburg’s Town Manager. “The new powdercoating
should last ten to fifteen years. The total cost for the refurbishing and reinstallation of the
meters was approximately $13,000. In contrast, estimates for replacing the meters ranged from
$80,000 to $100,000, depending on the options, so we saved a lot of money by refurbishing the
old meters.”
“Normally, we would not have installed the replacement meters before the construction on
King and Loudoun streets,” Dentler continued. “However, because so many of the meters were
malfunctioning and creating customer service issues with tickets being issued incorrectly, I felt
that getting the refurbished meter installed as soon as possible was the best choice. As
construction begins in different sections of downtown, the meters will be removed, stored and
reinstalled as necessary.”
All parking meters, with exception of the two 15-minute meters in front of the post office on
East Market Street, have a two-hour limit.
