Sinkhole in Exeter Neighborhood Under Repair
Leesburg, VA (August 17, 2015 | 11:00am) – On Sunday morning, August 16, a sinkhole
developed on Currant Terrace NE in the Exeter neighborhood of Leesburg.
The sinkhole was approximately 30 feet wide and 40 feet long. Initially, the roadway sank about
three feet. The sinkhole has impacted Town of Leesburg utility lines running under Currant
Terrace and the adjacent parking courts. At the present time, approximately 65 townhomes on
Currant, Clove, Peppermill and Warrenton Terraces are without water service. The Town hopes
to have service restored by this evening.
Currant Terrace is a private street, owned and maintained by the Exeter Homeowners
Association. In order to expedite the repairs, the Town of Leesburg has contracted with
Madigan Construction to excavate the sinkhole and repair the street and adjacent sidewalk.
Excavation work is currently underway.
Once the sinkhole is fully excavated, Town Utilities staff will assess needed repairs to water and
sewer lines, which may require additonal interruptions in service. Full repairs are expected to
take up to a week to complete. Exeter HOA will reimburse the Town for the repair work.
Customers with questions about their water service should call the Utilities Department at 703-
737-7075.
