S&W Manufacturing
Would you like a little bit of Riverdale trivia? Riverdale has businesses that can claim they were here
before the City of Riverdale even existed! One of those is S&W Manufacturing. They are located at the corner of
South Bellingham Road and State Street, and have been there since 1939...that is 84 years in business! In fact,
they had 3 family members who signed the original petition to incorporate as a city. With so much history,
I thought it would be nice to shine a spotlight on one of our longest running businesses.
Please enjoy getting to know your neighbor: S&W Manufacturing.
S&W was started in a Davenport basement in 1936 by two men: Everett Snyder and Mr. West. Early in
the shop’s history, Everett Snyder was able to buy out his original partner and turn S&W MFG CORP into a
family- run business. Today’s S&W is ran by the 3rd generation: Phil Snyder (current CEO), Chet Burroughs
(current Vice President), and the late Cliff Burroughs. 4th generation, Dustin Snyder, is also an active member
serving as the General Manager and CFO.
The first manufacturing S&W did was that of embalming machines. S&W had their machine patented and
moved to what is now known as Riverdale to run the shop in 1939. Production of the embalming machine did
not last very long as WW2 broke out and the shop turned to war production, primarily making artillery parts and
minesweepers. After the war, their production shifted to making front-end stabilizer bars for International
Harvester tractors. The shop was buzzing, running 24 hours a day from 1960 to 1977. Another trivia tidbit – the
last known use of their embalming machine was in 1970, when a man from the South arrived at their door to
inquire about repairing his machine!
Today, S&W makes specialized handheld tooling for other companies and produces the flag holder (the
piece that holds the flags in the ground) that the Davenport and Bettendorf Optimist clubs use for their flag
displays. Additionally, they still make farm equipment parts and complete a few other once a year odds -and-ends
jobs. For their smaller jobs, they have fixed trailers and lawn fixtures for community members; however, the cost
of fixing a lawn fixture generally outweighs the purchase of a new one. One thing they will not work on is
anything that deals with auto repair. If it is under the hood, they recommend taking the item to a mechanic. If
you have anything that you would like them to work on, they are currently at a one month turn around time.
S&W is open typically open Monday to Friday from 7a to
noon, but hours can vary day to day based on their workload. The
shop also has no air conditioning, so you may find they leave earlier
during the hot summer days. In the winter, they may come in later
based on snowfall. The best way to reach them is by phone at
563-355-2991.
This is just a small portion of their history! If you are interested in
learning more, give them a ring. I am sure they would be happy to
share!
