Geotechnical Analysis on Exeter Sinkhole Underway
Leesburg, VA (August 21, 2015) –
This morning, crews from
GeoConcepts Engineering began a
geotechnical analysis of the sinkhole
on Currant Terrace NE in the Exeter
neighborhood.
The first step on the analysis is a
geophysical study of the area
through an Electrical Resistivity
Investigation (ERI). In an ERI,
electricity is sent into the ground
using 18” metal rods, spaced
approximately five feet apart. Each
soil type, as well as open voids, conducts the electricity differently, allowing them to create a
relatively detailed cross section of the area. The ERI will take most of Friday to complete.
The preliminary results from this test should be available on Tuesday, and will determine what,
if any, drilling will be needed to substantiate the geophysical study. If drilling is necessary, that
work will be done at the end of next week.
Following completion of the geotechnical analysis, Town staff will work with GeoConcepts
Engineering to prepare a remediation plan for the sinkhole and permanent repairs to the water
and sewer lines.
