HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2015-09-22 ladies tennis team Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Media Contact: Betsy Fields, Research & Communications Manager bfields@leesburgva.gov  703-771-2734 Leesburg Ladies Tennis Team Headed to USTA Adult National Championship in Arizona Leesburg, VA (September 22, 2015) – Ida Lee Park Tennis Center’s Ladies 40 & Over 3.5 Team, the “Heat Strokes,” has captured a slot at the 2015 United States Tennis Association (USTA) League’s Adult National Championship, to be held October 23-25, 2015, at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona. The Heat Strokes members include team captain Lori Miller, Dina Bessa, Christine Cegielski, Terry Cocozza, Shirley Cornett, Heidi Davis, Beth Elrefai, Jennifer Gannaway, Nicole Houman, Jodi Mallon, Caren Penso, Kate Putt, Darci Renzi, Kristen Roberts, Jennifer Schneider, Joan Shergalis, Barbara Tobler, Heidi Venable, Lisa Wylie, and Mary Yee. USTA League is the country’s largest recreational tennis league, organized as competitive team match play. Teams and matches are set up according National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) rating categories so that teammates and their opponents have similar skill levels. The ratings are based on a scale from 1.0 (player is just starting to play tennis) to 7.0 (player makes his/her living from tournament prize money). The Heat Strokes won the Shenandoah Valley Tennis Association League season title to qualify for the Virginia District Championship Tournament in Newport News, Virginia. The ladies advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championship, also held in Newport News, after taking the District title. The team continued its winning streak by secu ring the Mid-Atlantic championship and will compete in the USTA Adult National Championship on October 23 -25, 2015, at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tuscon, Arizona. TOL PR 2015-09-22 Ladies Tennis Team Page 2 Ida Lee Park Tennis Center is part of the Town of Leesburg’s Parks & Recreation Department, a two-time recipient of the National Parks and Recreation Association’s Gold Medal Award for Excellence. In addition, the Ida Lee Park Tennis Center was named an Outstanding Public Tennis Center by the United States Tennis Association in 2002, and has been recognized by the USTA Virginia Chapter and the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society.
