A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF LYNWOOD REQUESTING THE
GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO CONSIDER
A PARDON FOR JAMES BROWN.
WHEREAS, James Brown was born in the Red Clay Hills on
the Georgia-Carolina border; and
WHEREAS, James Brown left school in the seventh grade; and
WHEREAS, James Brown has motivated children to stay in
school with his song "DON'T BE A DROPOUT"; and
WHEREAS, James Brown has provided scholarships and play-
ground equipment for underprivileged children; and
WHEREAS, James Brown has won many Gold Records and a
Grammy Award; and
WHEREAS, James Brown went on to become known as a legend
in his own time as "THE GODFATHER OF SOUL"; and
WHEREAS, James Brown lost millions in helping the Mayors
of Boston and Washington, D.C. put down riots after the King
Assassination; and
WHEREAS, James Brown was invited to the White House to
dine and entertain Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M.
Nixon; and
~ WHEREAS, James Brown has spent much of his career creating
and supporting Black pride; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lynwood recog-
nizes the vast contributions James Brown has made throughout his
career and the role model he has set for others.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Lynwood
requests the ,Governor of South Carolina to pardon, commute or
suspend the sentence of James Brown to one of a fine and/or
time served.
