HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2015-10-09 Hammler elected VML VP Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Media Contact: Betsy Fields, Research & Communications Manager bfields@leesburgva.gov  703-771-2734 Leesburg Town Council Member Katie Sheldon Hammler Elected Vice President of Virginia Municipal League for 2016 Leesburg, VA (October 9, 2015) – At the Virginia Municipal League (VML) annual conference in Richmond earlier this week, Leesburg Town Council Member Katie Sheldon Hammler was elected Vice President of the organization for 2016. Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam was elected President, and Gordonsville Mayor Robert Coiner will serve as President-Elect. In 2017, Council Member Hammler will become VML President- Elect and will then serve as VML President in 2018. Ms. Hammler’s election marks the first time in VML’s 110 year history that a Leesburg representative has been elected to an executive role. "VML is the organization that empowers the most important level of government in our Commonwealth – the local level,” said Ms. Hammler. “Our members identify problems and create solutions that directly impact their citizens, and VML has a critical role to play to foster collaboration, the sharing of ideas, and inspiring positive change. I am honored to be part of the leadership team that will work energetically to advance our shared goals.” “Katie is highly regarded as a strong addition to the VML executive committee,” commented Leesburg Vice Mayor Kelly Burk, who attended this year’s conference. “Her election as Vice President is a great opportunity for both her and Leesburg. I am very proud of her hard work and success.” Council Member Hammler has served on the VML Executive Committee since 2011. She was the Town Section Chair for two consecutive years, and then was elected to serve as an At -Large officer member of the board. Prior to joining the executive committee, she chaired VML’s Community and Economic Development committee, and was a member of its Legislative Committee. Council Member Hammler was first elected to the Leesburg Town Council in 2004 and is currently serving her third four-year term on Council. She served as vice mayor from 2008- 2010. She earned a BA in International Relations from Brown University, which she attended on an ROTC scholarship, and an MBA in Information Systems Management from The George Washington University. A former Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, Ms. Hammler is Telos’ Cybersecurity and Information Assurance Xacta product manager. She and her husband, Rich, also an Army Veteran, have two children and have lived in Leesburg for over 21 years. The Virginia Municipal League is a statewide, non-profit, non-partisan association of city, town and county governments established in 1905 to improve and assist local governments through legislative advocacy, research, education and other services. The membership includes all 39 cities in the Commonwealth, 159 towns and ten counties. # # #
