HomeMy Public PortalAbout2019-12-17 minutesRecreation Services Committee Work Session Tuesday, December 17, 2019 Noon Wellness Center – Room 116 1299 Lafayette Street Jefferson City, MO 65101 The work session was called to order at Noon by Co-chair Lindsey Rowden Committee members present included Rudy Veit, Steve Duncan, and Stephen Buchholz, Commissioner Lindsey Rowden and Stu Murphy were present. Staff present included Steve Schellman, Logan Shea, Phil Stiles, James Reinkemeyer, Angie Toebben, Alexis Kerman, Julie Haupt, Kerri Gates, Andrew Brunner, Aaron Grefrath, and Amy Shaw. Program Manager – Membership Director Update Aaron Grefrath introduced Andrew Brunnert the new Program Manager in charge of memberships at the Linc. Grefrath stated that Brunnert will begin looking at corporate memberships and incentives to grow memberships at the Linc. Brunnert introduced himself to committee members. Brunnert stated he looks forward to digging into the membership options for the department. Recreation Program Specialist Update Grefrath introduced Logan Shea, the new Recreation Specialist, to the committee. Grefrath stated that Shea will be in charge of concessions and start smart programming. Shea introduced himself to committee members. He stated he is a native of Jefferson City and a graduate of Lincoln University. He stated he is learning a lot and looks forward to learning and serving. Table Tennis Discussion Grefrath stated that at the December 10 Commission Meeting , members of the table tennis group approached the Commission asking for space and time to play at the Linc. Grefrath stated that in the past they have been housed at Shikles, but due to the sale of the facility they are looking for a new home. He stated that staff has looked at solutions and are looking at housing them at the North Jeff facility from December – March and then April – September house them at the Linc. Adding new Rec Services Committee Members Grefrath stated that he has tasked his staff to look within their programs and try to find members of the community to submit a name of someone to add to the committee. He stated he feels it is important so that the community bring items to the committee before the commission. Grefrath stated this will enable staff to provide recommendations to the Commission to keep things moving in a positive manner. Department Updates  Swimming Pools – Julie Julie Haupt reported that senior citizen passes will be offered at the pools this summer. She stated that she and staff are looking at the possibility of keeping Ellis Porter open till September 13. She will be adding adult swim lessons this year and looking to implement a clear bag policy this year. She stated she feels that the clear bag policy would protect the staff and detour the thefts at the pools. Grefrath added that he and Julie are looking at offering Active Shooter Training for the staff so they are equipped with how to handle situations at the pool and in the community.  Mayor’s Tree – Julie/LeAnn Julie stated that the theme for the tree this year was Fa rmland Christmas. She stated that reindeer were brought in for the event as well as the food trucks that were brought in for the community.  Community Art - LeAnn Grefrath reported the LeAnn Porrello was unable to attend, but she helped with the Mayor’s tree. Grefrath stated that she and Amy Schroeder are working on sculpture projects for Jefferson City.  Special Events – Phil Phil Stiles distributed a packet that detailed the special events since the last meeting. Stiles highlighted the Porchfest Event that was held on Forest Drive, the Capital City Festival of Lights at Binder Park, and the upcoming Peddle Ridge Jamboree event.  Ice Arena – Kerri Kerri Gates stated that the Ice Arena is busy. The Skate with Santa and Guaranteed White Christmas eventers are coming up. She reported that staff continues to work on the Merger and hopes to present information to the Commission in January regarding the merger. Gates reported that since the Ice Arena is now a year round facility, it is recommended that the ice bed be redone every four to five years. June 14 will be the last day and sessions will resume on July 13 to allow staff time to rebuild the ice bed.  Camps and Leisure Classes – Angie Toebben stated that she is working on the holiday camps that will be offered during the Christmas break. She also reported that she is working on a new online program that will integrate with our software. She stated that the new online program will enable staff to better handles transfers and cancellations from camps. Toebben also reported on the leisure classes and walking programs.  Special Populations – James James Reinkemeyer reported on the JC Stars programs and their upcoming games and tournaments. In Friday Night Recreation, donations were received for the Christmas program, and each participant not only received dinner, but they received a gift at the program.  The Linc – Aaron/Andrew Grefrath reported that the Silver Sneakers program is up and going. Amy Lee is one of the instructors who are certified to teach classes and she is teaching classes on Monday and Wednesday. On Thanksgiving Day, a Turkey Burner workout was held. Participants donated $434 for the Halo organization in Jefferson City. Grefrath reported that the exercise classes and memberships continue to grow.  Youth Sports – Steve Steve Schellman stated that flag football is finished for the year and 47 teams participated. Schellman stated that he has a couple of basketball leagues going on now and high school hoops will begin soon as well as girls junior nba.  Adult Sports – Missy In the absence of Missy Morarity, Grefrath reported that she has been working with the pickleball group to try and find more gym time. Morarity is working on an indoor corn hole tournament. Adult volleyball leagues are currently playing and Morarity will assist with the Start Smart programs until Logan is able to take on the programming.  Outdoor Recreation – Alexis Kerman reported that she is working on new programs for 2020. TREK Adventures is one new program that she is offering which will be a three day – two night adventure at a state park. Kerman reported on the Missouri Loves Company Ultimate Frisbee Tournament that she ran in the fall of 2019. She is working to plan the event again for the fall of 2020. The ropes course is closed for the season. Kerman hopes to build the programming for the 2020 season and becoming a certified professional in the field. Kerman reported on the Tall Oak Mountain Bike Race that will be offered and reported that she will be running the Catch Me If you Can event next year. Adjournment Being no other business, the Recreation Services Committee Work Session was adjourned by Co-chair Lindsey Rowden at 12:55 p.m. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for March 17, 2020 – Noon at The Linc.
