Tuscarora and Heritage High School Art Students Paint Town
Snow Plow Blades for Public Art Project
Leesburg, VA (October 27, 2015) – In the
Leesburg Kiwanis Halloween parade this
Saturday, two Town of Leesburg Public
Works Department trucks will be sporting
snow plow blades featuring art work by
local high school students.
The public art project, sponsored by the
Leesburg Commission on Public Art (COPA),
was inspired by similar programs in Ohio
and Illinois.
After approval of the program by the
Leesburg Town Council in September,
COPA invited all of the high schools in
Leesburg to participate. Tuscarora High
School and Heritage High School agreed
and submitted artwork to COPA for review
(Loudoun County High School was unable
to participate due to other project
commitments, but looks forward to
participating next year). Earlier this month,
COPA approved one design for each school
and snow plow blades were delivered to
the schools by the Town’s Street Division.
Students had approximately two weeks to
complete their paintings. Snow plow blades
were picked up from the schools yesterday by the Town to be mounted on trucks for Saturday’s
parade.

“Painting snow plows was a fun, easy way to involve the high school students in a public art
project,” said Vice Mayor Kelly Burk, who helped coordinate with the Loudoun County Public
Schools on project approvals. “Public art can take many forms and doesn’t have to involve
permanent installations of art works. I look forward to seeing the completed paintings on
Saturday.”
Depending on winter weather events between now and e arly December, the snow plow blades
may also be featured in the Christmas and Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 12.
