Mayor Kristen Umstattd Resigns to Take Position on Loudoun
County Board of Supervisors
Vice Mayor Kelly Burk will fulfill the duties of the Mayor until an interim
appointment is made.
Leesburg, VA (December 31, 2015) – Kristen Umstattd tendered her resignation as Mayor of
Leesburg, effective 11:59pm on December 31, 2015. On January 1, 2016, Umstattd will take
office as the Leesburg District Supervisor on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, a
position to which she was elected in November 2015.
Following Umstattd’s resignation, Vice Mayor Kelly Burk will perform the duties of the Mayor
until the Town Council makes an interim appointment of Mayor. The Town Council can appoint
a sitting Council Member or a “qualified voter” of the Town to be Mayor and that person will
serve until a Mayor is elected in the November 2016 election. If the Town Council fails to make
the interim appointment within 90 days of Umstattd’s resignation, the Circuit Court may do so.
The Town Council is expected to discuss its interim appointment of Mayor at their January 11,
2016, work session, with possible action at their January 12, 2016, regular meeting.
