HomeMy Public PortalAbout85-005 (01-15-85)RESOLUTION NU. 8'_5 A xESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOUD URGING THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO TAKE POSITIVE ACTION TO CONTROL TELEPHONE xATES WHEREAS, telephone services is essential to the health and welfare of every American citizen; and WHEREAS, telephone company rates continue to be in- creased unjustifiably when viewed along with the cost of living; and WHEREAS, senior citizens and others on fixed income are least able to afford increases in the cost of essential tele- phone services; and WHEREAS, the purchasing power of every American Citizen is eroded by the ever-increasing cost of essential telephone ser- vices; and WHEREAS, all nusinessmen suffer the loss of sales when people can no longer afford to buy goods and services; and WHEREAS, sales tax revenue to every level of government is decreased when the economy fails for the lack of spendable income; and WHEREAS, needed public services suffer when this critical revenue base declines. I NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT xESOLVED by the City Council of IS the City of Lynwood as follows: Section 1. The City Council of the City of Lynwood_ urges the Legislature and the Governor of the State of California to take positive action to assure that telephone rates are raised not more than once each calendar year in the amount not to exceed the annual percentage rise of the consumer price index. Section 2. The City Clerk is directed to transmit certified copies of this resolution to each member of the Calif- ornia State Legislature, the Governor, Congressman Matthew Martinez, United States Senator Alan Cranston and Pete Wilson, and the California Contract Cities Association. Section 3. The Mayor is hereby authorized to affix his signature to this resolution signifying its adoption by the City Council of the City of Lynwood, and the City Clerk is directed to attest thereto.
