DESIGN REVIEW BOARD
MEETING MINUTES
Tuesday, February 18, 2014 7:00 PM
Town Hall, 18 Main Street, Hopkinton, MA
MEMBERS PRESENT: Jeffrey Doherty, Chairman; Shawn McGuiness (alternate), Sue Ellen
Stoddard, Jeanette Thomson, Claire Wright
MEMBERS ABSENT: Ria McNamara (alternate), Gail Fallon
The meeting was called to order at 7:40 P.M.
5 Walcott St. – Mr. Ed Tarca and Mr. Joseph Marquedant came before the Board to present
plans to modify the two car garage at 5 Walcott St. into retail and office space. Mr. Tarca
stated that the remodeling project is part of the larger project proposed for 42 Main St.
Mr. Tarca showed elevations for the remodeled building and presented cut sheets for proposed
exterior light fixtures over the sign in the gable and to replace the two existing lights on the
front of the building. Board members expressed concern that the new fixtures appeared to
feature exposed bulbs and stated that a shielded light source is preferable . Mr. Tarca stated
that the proposed fixtures are inexpensive and only temporary until a full building design can
be presented as part of the overall site development plan for 42 Main and 5 Walcott. He said
that siding colors, lighting plans, paint schemes etc. would be presented later, and the light
fixtures could be determined then. He said he does not want to hold up getting started on the
remodeling work and is only seeking the Board’s approval for the overall structural changes
from the two garage doors to the double bay windows.
Board members expressed concern that temporary replacement fixtures might become
permanent by oversight. The Board suggested to Mr. Tarca that he keep the original fixtures for
the present, with the understanding that the Design Review Board will have the opportunity to
review new fixtures in the near future as part of the larger site plan process. The Board
supported the proposed structural changes and general redesign of the 5 Walcott St. property
and had no further recommendations.
Minutes - The minutes of the December 17, 2013 and January 21, 2014 meetings were
approved.
