Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District

Dear Chairperson Mary Dave and Member,,,of the Board of Directors,
I am writing concerning the Open space District draft Regional Open Space Study.
Unfortunately, I have a conflict and will not be able to attend the October 7, meeting.
However, I want to convey my strong support for the concept of preserving a greenbelt on
the Peninsula.
One of the issues which has been ongoing since the beginning of the District is of particular
interest to me. That is the question of resource allocation. How much land and money and
staff should the District allocate to recreation and how much should the District allocate for
preservation?
The purpose of this letter to is urge that preservation should be your highest priority.
Above all you should protect the natural habitat and continuity of the vegetation and purity
of the water and enhance the wildlife values on your holdings. As the population of the
peninsula explodes, the pressure to open more lands to recreation will be overwhelming.
Bikers, dog owner.-, as well as,hikers will demand more access. When speakers address
you at public meeting they promise the best behavior, however, their consistent "off leach"
behavior and off trail bike riding have left destructive paths behind them. I see it all the
time while walking Windy Hill.
In summary, please tip the scale in favor of protecting wildlife habitat, watershed,
ecosystems and restoring damaged natural resources. Your agency is unique in that no
other public agency in the region has that as part of their mission. If you don't provide
these protections, who will? Please emphasize preservation over recreation.
Sincerely,
Linda Elkind
