HomeMy Public PortalAbout2020-06-16 minutesRecreation Services Committee Work Session Tuesday, June 16, 2020 Noon Wellness Center – Room 204 1299 Lafayette Street Jefferson City, MO 65101 The work session was called to order at Noon by Co-chair Andre Grinston, Committee members present included Steve Duncan, Stephen Buchholz, Glenda Fry, and Rudy Veit. Commissioners Stu Murphy Andre Grinston and Chris Leuckel were present. Staff present included Steve Schellman, Phil Stiles, Angie Toebben, Alexis Kerman, Julie Haupt, Andrew Brunnert, Aaron Grefrath, Amy Shaw, Ray Potts and Carly Potts. COVID-19 Updates Aaron Grefrath reported that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Linc was closed for a brief time and schedules were modified to adhere to the phased reopening. Many sports leagues were postponed as well due to the COVID restrictions. Grefrath stated that throughout the COVID pandemic Kristy Campbell at the Cole County Health Department has provided top notch care and instructions to staff. Propose new committee members Grefrath stated he has tasked the recreation staff with the assignment of finding more committee members. Grefrath stated he feels that as concerns with programs are brought forth, this committee could be the first stop, before going to the Commission. Committee members were positive with adding more members to the Recreation Services Committee. Outdoor Recreation - Alexis Kerman Alexis Kerman provided an update on outdoor recreation. She stated that at the ropes course, summer camps are the primary users at this time. Kerman is planning for TREX adventure camping events at State Parks. She is hopeful these camping events gain interest. Kerman also reported on the community bike rides, the Binder Park campground, Catch Me If You Can event, and the Tall Oaks mountain bike event on September 2. Special Events – Phil Stiles Phil Stiles stated that many events had to be canceled due to COVID -19. He stated that Porchfest was held virtually and nearly 3,000 watched the event on Facebook throughout the day. The Jefferson City Triathlon was postponed as the Peddlers Jamboree will be held on September 5. The first movie night was held on August 29 at the Ellis Porter Amphitheatre and the remaining movies will be held at Vivion field.  Arts - Leann Porrello She was unable to attend the event. In her absence, Stiles reported that she is working on public art features on Capitol Avenue.  Ice Arena - Aaron Grefrath Grefrath reported that Kerri Gates resigned and Anthony Weeks has been hired and will start on June 29. Grefrath also introduced Carly Potts who is in charge of all the lesson programs, and Ray Potts who has taken over many of the day to day responsibilities at the Ice Arena. Grefrath reported that due to COVID-19, the Ice Arena was closed and gave the staff the time to remake the ice.  Aquatics - Julie Haupt Julie Haupt reported that the pools opened on June 5 and explained how hours and cleaning were handled during Phase 1 and what to expect during Phase 2. Haupt stated that she has great staff again this year and is proud of them for their work. Haupt also explained the Clear Bag Policy that went into effect this year and the reasons for this policy. She stated that should those coming to the pool not have a clear bag, they are available to purchase.  Linc – Aaron Grefrath and Andrew Brunnert Grefrath reported that during the COVID pandemic when the Linc was closed, virtual exercise classes were offered through Facebook Live. He also stated that memberships continue to grow. Grefrath introduced the Membership Director, Andrew Brunnert. Brunnert stated that he is working on a membership drive with the Jefferson City Public Schools during the month of July. Grefrath also reported that Brunnert will be assuming the work performed by Tina Werner due to her retirement.  Youth Sports – Steve Schellman Steve Schellman stated that baseball and softball programs have resumed and he will be working on summer and fall programs soon.  Adult Sports – Missy Morarity Missy Morarity stated she has been busy with adult softball, sand and indoor volleyball and pickleball.  JC Stars – James Reinkemeyer In the absence of James Reinkemeyer, Angie Toebben stated that James works with the JC Stars program. She reported that programs within JC Stars will start on June 19. Toebben reported that Special Olympics Missouri is scheduled to reopen on July 1, so practices for softball, golf, and bocce will resume.  Camps, Leisure Classes, Concessions – Angie Toebben Angie Toebben reported that camps are moving forward and staff is doing the best they can to sanitize and keep campers safe. Toebben gave an update on the leisure classes and the concession operations that she handles. Adjournment Being no other business, the Recreation Services Committee Work Session was adjourned by Co-chair Andre Grinston at 1:04 p.m. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 15, 2020 – Noon at The Linc.
