Bohne, Chur ch, Clark, Grant, Jo hns, Jo slin , Lawrence, Leith, Lovestead, Macon and Wiegand. The purpose of the meeting was discussion of improvement recommendatio ns for Davenport St. The question of con gested traffic at the Sutliff —Dav enport Sts. i nte r— ection was discussed: A mo tion was made by Ald. Jo hn s, secon ded by A1d. awrence to refer this matter to the Prote ctio n of Person s & Property and to consider changing the stop sign to Su tliff Ave, from Davenport St . Carried una nimously. The follo win g improvement reco mmendations for Davenport St. we re sub. mitted by the Dir ector of Public Works; 1. Widen Daven port Street from 32 feet to 42 feet wide, from L ot 11, Block 3* West Park A ddition , or fro m where Davenport Street curves south to the Soo Lin e underpa ss. 2. Install a lighted concrete pedestrian tu nnel on the north side of the underpass back of the abu tmen t. Remove the old stone walkway in the underpass. In stall a. 4 foo t wide walkway on the south side of the u nderpa ss. 3. Re —su rface Davenport Street fr om the Soo, Line u nderpass to the Wis consin River. Install n ew 36 inch st rom sewer from the Wisconsin Rive r to the Soo Lin e un derpass. Raise c urb on north side of the street* The following projects are to be abando ned to fina nce this project: $534.00 9,360.00 3 .3 2,028 .00 14/ .3 5,©D5.©0 5 .3 1,430.00 6 .2 $ 1,080.00 $19,437.00 The entire cost of the project as estimated by the Directo r of Public Works is $50,173.00 of which $32,700 is budgeted. The balance is to be obtained by abandoning th e ab ove projects, and maki ng this wholly a city ventu re. The mayor stated that he had talked to C ongressman O'Konski and the the Congressman said we=ightobtain a waiver, since Davenport St. is n ot a Feder al or State Highway. The Co ngressman requested that the mayo r write a letter to him on a waiver for a 14: height. A letter was writte n to Mr. Woodward, the Director of P ublic W orks, by M r. W.J. Davis, Vice President a nd Ge ne ral Ma nager of the Rhi nelander Paper Company, dated Ma rch 15, 1965. The lette r made refe re nce to a meeting earlier in the day,between the two, when three items i ndicated as "Impr ovement Recommendati ons for Davenport Street if this is to be a City Project", were discussed. It stated that their outlined general poi nt of view on the rec— ommendations were only ge neral comments which were hardly adequ ate without a re ason able amount of engineering detail to st udy and evaluate. A copy of this letter is on file in the city cle rk's office. A_ motion was made by A1d . Wiegand to accept the recomme ndatio ns of the Directo r of Public Works regarding Davenport St. and also the recommendat— ions of the Rhinelander P aper Co . o utlined in the lette r on file in the city cle rk's office. The motion was seconded by Ald . Maco n. 0n roll call, carri ed u nanimously.
