WHEREAS, to raise awareness of the consequences of preventable fires and bring fire safety to the
forefront of public consciousness, US President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire
Prevention Week for the first time in 1925; and,
WHEREAS, this year, National Fire Prevention Safety week is observed in the United States during the
week of October 8-14, and is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA); and,
WHEREAS, this year's campaign is "Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention;"
and according to the NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with 49% of all
home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire
injuries; and,
WHEREAS, this year's theme aims to remind citizens of the importance of educating everyone about
simple, yet important, actions to take to keep themselves and those around them safe
when cooking.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, do hereby proclaim October
8-14, 2023
FIRE PRAEvN1T IONWEEK
in Riverdale, Iowa, and urge all residents, businesses, and visitors to become more aware of ways to
prevent fires and to take measures to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones when cooking
and otherwise.
