The work session was called to order at Noon by Co-chair Chris Duren.
Committee members present included Glenda Fry and Steve Duncan. In addition to
Commissioner Duren, Commissioners Karen Brickey, Roger Schwartze, and Stu
Murphy were present. Staff present included Steve Schellman, Aaron Grefrath,
Andrew Brunnert, Amy Shaw, Angie Toebben, Julie Haupt, Alexis Ker man, James
Reinkemeyer, and Anthony Weeks.
Introduction of Anthony Weeks
Aaron Grefrath introduced Anthony Weeks who will be in charge of the Ice Arena.
Anthony thanked the committee and staff for the warm welcome and stated he is
excited about the opportunity to serve at the Ice Arena.
COVID_19 Updates
Grefrath stated that as more cases are reported in Cole County, we are seeing
participants in programs affected. He stated that families and patrons have been great
at self-reporting cases to the department. Grefrath stated that staff is filling out an
employee questionnaire, taking temperatures daily, and are wearing masks anytime
they are away from their desk or in meetings. The fitness center is closed from 2 -3 p.m.
daily for cleaning and the total number allowed in the fitness center at one time is 15.
The Ice Arena has posted social distancing guidelines and temperature checks will soon
be implemented.
Propose, review, and approve of new committee members
Grefrath included in the meeting packet questionnaires and information on new
committee members for the Recreation Services Committee. The new members are
recommended from various programs and will bring new insights to the committee.
Outdoor Recreation – Alexis Kerman
Alexis Kerman stated they were able to run some programs this year, but she was most
excited about her first TREK event. She reported that the ropes course was held during
June and rope activities were run in conjunction with the camps. She added that she
also had four outside rentals at the ropes course. Hayrides are gearing up and she is
looking forward to a great season. In closing, Kerman commented on the community
bike rides and stated they have been well attended.
Special Events – Phil Stiles
Phil distributed information on special events that were scheduled June-December. He
stated that a number of events had to be canceled due to COVID.
Arts – Leann Porrello
Leann was unable to attend the meeting due to a conflict. In her absence, Phil Stiles
distributed a flyer that showed events during September and October.
Ice Arena – Anthony Weeks
Anthony Weeks provided an update to the committee on activities at the Ice Arena. He
reported that the adult hockey league has started and that a 3 -3 tourney was hosted.
Group lessons and synchro teams are ongoing and a costume contest will be held on
Halloween.
Aquatics – Julie Haupt
Julie Haupt reported that Memorial Pool has closed for the season and Ellis Porter
remains open through September 20. She stated that t he clear bag policy has proved to
be effective this year reducing thefts.
Haupt commented on the one major save that was done this summer. She commended
her staff for the life saving techniques used to save the life of the patron.
She stated that swimming lessons participation was down this summer due to COVID.
She added that she offered adult swim lessons this year and hopes to grow this set of
lessons next year.
In closing, Haupt reported on the Mayor’s Christmas Tree. She stated that she will be
working with Mayor Tergin to offer as much of the event as possible this year since it
will be virtual..
The Linc – Aaron Grefrath and Andrew Brunnert
Grefrath reported that Linc memberships continue to grow. He added that the Linc has
been busy with events such as the Tri-Lakes basketball tournament, a volleyball
tournament, archery competition, LU basketball camp and the Jefferson City High
School Project Graduation.
Andrew Brunnert reported that during the month of August a membership drive was
done with Jefferson City Public Schools. He stated it didn’t produce the numbers we
hoped for, but this will run yearlong so they can join when they want. In closing,
Brunnert stated that he has been working with Aaron Grefrath to offer a membership to
City employees.
Adults Sports, Start Smart – Missy Morarity
In the absence of Missy Morarity, Grefrath reported that the summer leagues went well,
but due to the summer rains, the season had to be pushed back.
Grefrath reported that the pickleball program continues to grow and we have been able
to help the Table Tennis group find places to play for their group.
Youth Sports – Steve Schellman
Steve Schellman stated that youth sports had a great summer despite the setbacks due
to COVID. Schellman stated this fall he will have NFL Flag Football leagues, the 5th
grade flag football leagues with the Jefferson City Public Schools, and a fall competitive
baseball and softball league. In closing, Schellman commented on the basketball
leagues that will be offered this winter.
JC Stars – James Reinkemeyer
James Reinkemeyer commented that many of the special population events were
canceled due to COVID, so the teams have just been practicing.
Reinkemeyer stated that the storybook trail is currently at Memorial Park and will then
be moved to West Edgewood Greenway Trail.
Camps, Leisure classes, concession – Angie Toebben
Angie Toebben commented on all the day camps this summer and stated she had a
great staff and the camps went well.
Toebben stated that due to renovations of McClung that many of the JC Stars events
had to be canceled as well as some of the leisure classes. Toebben stated that the karate
program is still taking place at the North Jeff Multipurpose Building.
In closing, Toebben reported on the concession programs and stated with the addition
of 63 Diamonds, they were quite busy.
Adjournment
Being no other business, Stu Murphy made a motion that the meeting adjourn. Roger
Schwartze seconded the motion. The motion passed with all voting in favor. The
Recreation Services Committee Work Session was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled December 15, 2020 – Noon at The Linc.
