HomeMy Public PortalAbout2020-09-25 MinutesMinutes of Meeting Commission on Human Relations Friday, September 25, 2020 Due to COVID-19 and social distancing recommendations, the Commission on Human Relations meeting was made available by using a Webex meeting. ATTENDEES: Commission members present: Andria Hendricks, Susan Cook-Williams, Missy Creed, Kimberly Woodruff, Frank Rycyk, Mitchell Woodrum, Jane Barnes Commission members absent: Patsy Johnson Staff present: Gail Strope Others present: Mayor Carrie Tergin, Councilwoman Laura Ward The meeting came to order at 8:14 a.m. by Mitchell Woodrum. The August 21, 2020 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved with a motion by Susan Cook-Williams and second by Jane Barnes. The motion passed 5-0. Frank Rycyk abstained because he was absent for the August meeting. New Business: Stronger Through Diversity Speaking Event: Mitchell Woodrum discussed the next Speaker Series event, which will continue to be offered virtually. The topic will be on immigration and Mitchell encouraged all commissioners to be thinking of topics and speakers relevant to this. Frank Rycyk offered the names of two speakers who may be available and willing to participate. Commissioners are encouraged to brainstorm this topic and email Mitchell any ideas for consideration. Fair Housing Event -Recap: Mayor Carrie Tergin shared this event was held virtually and included a variety of speakers that spoke to the history and how housing issues have evolved around the country and the relevance to the Jefferson City housing market. Additional discussions were held about actions that could be taken to improve housing and availability in our community. Susan Cook Williams added she would share the notes taken by Donna Stone of the Jefferson City Area Board of Realtors with Mitchell to share with the group to summarize the event. Unfinished Business: Project DIVE: The partnership between the Jefferson City Arts Foundation and the Human Relations Commission on Project DIVE continues to progress. Missy Creed gave an update on this project which will soon be assembled and ready for distribution to about 20 area preschools. There are several secured community donors and growing interest in this project. Assembled packets will be delivered by volunteers from both organizations; details for participation will be emailed once the date and time is set. Delivery will offer several opportunities for promoting this event on social media in our community. Public Comment: None Adjournment: There being no further business, Frank Rycyk made the motion to adjourn which was seconded by Jane Barnes. The motion passed 6-0 ending the meeting at 8:34 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled to be virtual on October 23, 2020 at 8:00 a.m.
