Investigation of Meeting called to investigate charges against Saloon Keeper
charges against J. I. Azevedo by Town Marshal D A Smith of selling liquor to an
J. I. Azevedo intoxicated woman.
Night watchman Adolph Johnson testified that on
tht
Monday the 19 ins., the afternoon, his attention was called
to the drunken condition of several Mexican women in the vicinity
of the Azevedo saloon and later on in company of Marshal Smith
they watched the premises form the opposite side of the street.
From further evidence addressed it appeared that the officers
saw Azevedo put beer into a cask & hand some to Mrs. Pio, who
was intoxicated. The Marshal sized her & the cask and
being questioned she stated she had paid Azevedo the money
for the beer.
Saloon Keeper Azevedo being sworn testified in his own behalf &
acknowledged that the statements of the officers were correct, but
alleged that he did not know that Mrs. Pio was drunk, as it
was dark & she stood outside the side-door of his promises
As this was not the first time that Azevedo had been before
the board & had been cautioned to observe the law or forfeit
his license, it was moved by Trustee Harron & seconded by Trustee
Knox that the license of said J. I. Azevedo should be revoked
forthwith for selling liquor to an intoxicated woman, and the
License revoked Marshal was instructed to see that his plan of business remained
closed. The motion being put to a vote, it was carried unanimously.
