Mr. Doherty called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM.
1.84 - 92 West Main Street - Global/AllTown - Facade and Sign Review
Mr. Barbieri, representative of the applicant, presented the details of the
proposed changes for the gas station at the above address.
Ms. Stoddard arrived at this time.
Kevin Doyle, representative of the applicant, presented the details of the
signage proposed. He said the sign is individually cut letters rather than a
box sign.
Mr. Doherty asked if “Fresh” was always part of the AllTown logo. Mr.
Barbieri said no.
Ms. Thomson asked about the facade materials. Mr.Doyle said the materials
are wood, board and batten style. Mr. Doyle showed a board with material
samples. He said the majority of the front of the building is stained oak.
Ms. Thomson said the Alltown logo will be on the gray facade.
The Design Review Board generally discussed the facade details and colors.
Mr. Doherty asked if the letters are externally lit.Mr. Doyle said they are lit
by gooseneck lights shining down.
Ms. Thomson asked if the awnings are fabric. Mr.Doyle said they are metal,
but the blue color. There will be a small strip light attached to the awning
and projects down to light the sidewalk and curb.
Ms. Fein-Brug asked about the windows and if the ceiling is black inside. Mr.
Doyle said no interior lighting projects out from the footprint of the building.
The interior ceiling will be open truss and all black.
Mr. Doherty asked if the only standalone sign is the monument sign out
front. Mr. Doyle said there will be no sign on the canopy. Only the Mobil
pylon.
Ms. Fein-Brug said she thinks the signage is too large. The older version is
more compact. She asked if there was a way to make the sign smaller.
Mr. Doyle said they haven’t looked at smaller signs since they didn’t have any
issues at other locations.
Mr. Doherty asked Mr. Barbieri if the square footage of the sign is less than
what was previously approved. Mr. Barbieri said the allowed size is 100 sf
but they are proposing 60 sf.
Ms. Thomson asked if they could reduce the amount of lights on the sign.
She said the amount of lights above the sign make it look too bright. Mr.
Doyle said they could reduce the amount of light fixtures.
Mr. Maze asked if only the sign above the door was compared to the
previously approved sign, what would the difference in size be. Mr. Barbieri
said the front was 100 sf and the rear was 108 sf.The Design Review Board
generally discussed the size of the signs previously approved compared to
the current proposal.
Mr. Doherty said he thinks the change in the typeface may cause the illusion
of a larger sign. Ms. Fein-Brug concurred.
Ms. Fein-Brug asked if the background of the sign could be blended into the
building. Mr. Doyle said he doesn’t want the sign to blend into the building
too much.
Ms. Stoddard asked if the awning color is the right color. Mr. Doyle said it is a
seafoam green. Ms. Stoddard said the contrast makes the black background
look heavier. Mr. Barbieri asked if the awning over the front door can be the
same color.
The Design Review Board generally discussed the background of the sign and
whether it can be lightened to remove some contrast.
Ms. Thomson asked if the seafoam green awnings are a part of the corporate
color scheme. Mr. Doyle said yes.
The Design Review Board asked the applicant to work with the design team
to see if the comments could be incorporated into the proposed design.
Mr. Barbieri said they will bring these comments to the team and return next
month.

replace the existing sign. The existing sign is the same size, just a different
design on the face.
