HomeMy Public PortalAbout10/1991 * Breast Cancer Awareness MonthP R O C L A M A T I Proclaiming the month of October, 1991 as "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" WHEREAS, October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the American Cancer Society has been educating women and their families about the importance of early detection of breast cancer; and WHEREAS, one out of nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime; and WHEREAS, in Florida 10,500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,700 will die from the disease in 1991; and WHEREAS, breast cancer mortality could be reduced by 30% if women would follow the American Cancer Society's recommended three -step breast cancer screening guidelines: *Schedule regular mammograms, initial screening age 30 to 40, one every year or two to age 49, and every year after 50. *Practice monthly breast self- examination. *See a physician annually for regular breast examinations. WHEREAS, mammography enables physicians to diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stage when it has a 91% survival rate. NOW, THEREFORE, I, William F. Koch, Jr., Mayor do hereby proclaim the month of October, 1991 as "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" in the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida and urge all Gulf Stream women to become aware that they are at risk, and to discuss a screening program with their physicians. I urge all other Gulf Stream citizens to encourage a woman they love to do so. The American Cancer Society has been a leader in the community by educating women about this disease and the increased chances of survival through early detection and mammography. We hope you will join us in promoting October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Enclosed is a sample proclamation that you can use to publicize this lifesaving message to your citizens. The American Cancer Society in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties is offering a coordinated high quality, reduced rate mammography screening project. Our primary sponsor, WPEC TV 12, will kickoff "A Ray of Hope" promoting Breast Cancer Awareness month officially on September 30th. During October 1 -4, WPEC TV 12 will be running features on Breast Cancer and promote the following hotline number: 1/800/244 -5635. Women will be able to call the American Cancer Society hotline to be screened for eligibility and receive a list of participating centers and a voucher entitling them to a $55.00 mammogram. We offer this screening as a public service. We urge you to inform and encourage the women in your jurisdiction to take advantage of this project.
