Proclaiming November 21, 1991 as
GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT DAY
WHEREAS: The American Cancer Society's Great American
Smokeout is a lighthearted effort to encourage smokers to give
up their habit for 24 hours on Thursday, November 21; and
WHEREAS: For fourteen consecutive years, millions
of smokers, including many in the Town of Gulf Stream, have
participated in this event, and
WHEREAS: The health benefits of not smoking are
substantiated and well known; and
WHEREAS: There are additional civic benefits, such
as a reduction of the risks of accidental fires and illnesses
related to secondhand smoke;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William F. Koch, Jr., Mayor of the
Town of Gulf Stream do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 21,
1991 as
GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT DAY
in the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida and urge all smokers and
smokeless tobacco users in the community to demonstrate to
themselves and their friends that they can quit if they wish by
joining the American Society's 15th Annual Great American
Smokeout.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the Seal of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida to be affixed
this 15th day of November, 1991.

Each November, The American Cancer Society focuses its
attention on encouraging smokers throughout the United
States to give quitting a try for at least one day. This
day is known as the Great American Smokeout, and this year
will be held on November 21, 1991.

We encourage the cooperation of businesses in Palm Beach
County by asking them to make their work place smokefree for
that day and invite them to come to our Corporate Kick -off
Breakfast on November 8 at the South Florida Water
Management District at 3301 Gun Club Road to publicize their
efforts with media coverage and hints for making the day a
big success.
As the executive officer of your municipality or township we
would like to extend you the same invitation to attend the
Kick -off Breakfast and have your city's employees
participate in the Great American Smokeout. Additionally, we
have included a sample of the Smokeout proclamation that you
can adapt to use at the appropriate city council meeting to
declare your city smoke -free for the entire day of November

21, 1991.
The American Cancer Society continues to work toward our
goal of a smoke -free America by the year 2000. We look
forward to your participation in the Great American Smokeout
1991 and hope to see you at the Corporate Kick -off Breakfast

in this City, and in so doing, urge all smokers
and smokeless tobacco users in the community to
demonstrate to themselves and their friends that
they can quit if they wish by joining the American
Cancer Society's 15th Annual Great American
Smokeout.
