Overview of Suggestion 13ox Comments:
Chair, Paulette Bradley - It's a great way of communication. We have improved the form and it is both in
English and Spanish. We do track the comments from the suggestion box.
1) Problem with the TV. (Chair Paulette Bradley-it didn't work and that has been taken care of.)
2) When are we going out anywhere? (Chair Paulette Bradley-We need to check the activity board.
We are posting fliers. Just to let you know a little about the process. When we brainstorm on our
outings and trips, we have to have our fliers proofed, approved and we have [o complete all
paperwork to ask for permission for various outings. It takes a few days to go through this process
before we can post our Plier and get our sign-in-sheet and collect money if iYs a paid outing. It takes
a little while but 1 encourage you to keep your eyes on the bulletin board.)
3) Eating on the patio. (Chair Paulette Bradley-At this time we only have one large umbrella. We do
have a request for a second umbrella to give us more shade. Unfortunately there is only one large
canopy that the City owns and it does a lot of traveling. Every time there is an event they have to
break-down and take it The umbrella out in the courtyard cost $7,000.00, it is very expensive but
very durable.
4) Too many children in the dining room during lunch. (Chair Paulette Bradley-The facility is
designated for the senior community. This is not a childcare or nursery. 1 know some seniors are
actively involved in taking care of their grandchildren during the day. This is not the location to
bring your grandchildren. You must consider the other seniors who use this facility.
5) Complaints about saying the pledge of allegiance before lunch, instead of a prayer. (Chair Paulette
Bradley-The person commenting would like to suggest a prayer instead of the pledge of allegiance.
I think this person needs to step up to the Council so we can discuss it. I really don't know what to
say about someone not wanting to say the pledge of allegiance so perhaps they want to step forward
and talk to the Council or Hie Director.
Marisa Cordova -The site manager at most of the nutrition sites decides whether they want to do the pledge
of allegiance and invocation. Each site is different but that is part of the lunch program if they wish to have
the pledge of allegiance, invocation or prayer.
Chair, Paulette Bradley - It sounds like we need to have the manager pole the lunch program again if it
hasn't been done in the past. We need to get a consensus because the majority is going to rule on it.
Legislative Update-Zelda Hutcherson, President A.A.A.:
I am going to present information on two senior organizations that are critical to seniors throughout the
community and that includes the City of Lynwood. Ilu is passing out a brief synopsis of the Area Agency
on Aging and the California Senior Legislature. (Reading synopsis handout) we are currently working on a
proposal for long-term care for seniors in nursing homes. The proposal is being supported by Supervisor
Michael D. Antonovich to go to the legislature to rate care giving homes like they rate restaurants with A, B
or C grade. The senior organizations are coming together to support this legislation.
(Reading the California Senior Legislature Brochure) 1 represent the 19 cities throughout Los Angeles
County, Lynwood is one of them. The legislature meets once a year in Sacramento. The City of Los
Angeles and the county has a combined corpus, we meet once a month to discuss proposals on issues that
we receive from seniors throughout the community. We take the proposal to Sacramento, we are organized
into committees, we discuss the issues, ask questions about them and we pick the most critical needs of the
seniors. A binder is created and given to the legislators.
Roll-out of Emergency Contact/Registratiou:
Chair, Paulette Bradley- This is another reminder to all our members that we are rolling out our emergency
contact registration forms. It is very important and vital that we have this information on file for you.
Should you take ill, we need to know who to call or notify if something should happen. We have been here
for a year so we need to get going on this and get those applications filled out.
Summary of the Lynwood Bingo Club Adventure:
January 20, 2009 the bingo club sponsored the inaugural celebration at Bateman Hall. We had
approximately 350-400 people in attendance. We were lucky to have a talk radio show host. Kitty Felde
special corresponden[ for 89.3 interview us as the committee. From her interview we were able to get
channel 4 News and CNN to cover the inaugural celebration. It was very successful, we brought out a lot of
positive press to the City of Lynwood. The purpose of the ball was to fimdraise for the night bingo on
Thursdays, once a month every third Thursday of the month. We wanted to promote to get more people to
come out for Thursday night bingo and we were very successful.

Senior Advisory Council:
Chair, Paulette Bradley - We have an opening for the Senior Advisory Council. We need you to sign up at
City Clerks Office. The City Council chooses the new member but they need candidates.
Nicolas Villegas-Fiesta Taxi:
I am here to answer any questions you might have.
Pubic Orals:
Pearline Calderon -The questions that are being asked on the medical form are very invasive. If someone
has H.LV. do you want to expose that information? (Chair, Paulette Bradley-We had an incident where
someone was hurt, upon calling the fire department we found out that, the paramedics to come had 21
questions before they can even respond. All the questions they were asking pertaining to the person that
needed to be transported to the hospital, we didn't have a clue. We were embarrassed we didn't have any
knowledge of the person that was injured. We have researched other centers and compiled information of
what other centers are asking to keep on file. It is up to you, what information you want to divulge. Just
remember when you are in need of help the information we release is what we will have on file.)
Becky - I want to remind you again about the parking lot. When the City has events the Senior Citizens
can't find parking. (Chair, Paulette Bradley-I do have to preference that Bateman Hall is a money maker for
the most part. We do have problems with our parking. We are still working on a plan for parking. We have
turned in some suggestions. We are waiting for a response.)
Board Orals:
Member Lorene Reed - 1 want to thank Mrs. Hutcherson for bringing us the valuable information. l hope
she can join us on a quarterly basis to keep us updated.
Adjournment: Member D. Joyce Edner made a motion to adjourn, 2"`~ by Member Lorene Reed. By
unanimous consent the meeting adjourned at 12:58 p.m.
