Gonzalez, Village Manager DATE: April 26, 2019 SUBJECT: Update on March 22, 2019 Incident The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to update you on the Hate Crime Incident that occurred on March 22, 2019. Immediately after the incident, police staff members personally visited the Shul and Young Israel to notify their staff about the incident. Additional uniform and undercover officers were immediately deployed throughout the Village to ensure the continued safety of all congregants traversing to and from worship services. In an effort to locate and identify the individual responsible for the offense, the police department initiated a strategic and exhaustive criminal investigation. Investigators were able to obtain a detailed description of the perpetrator and circulated a descriptive flyer to our officers and the neighboring police departments. K-9 Officer Duarte, in conjunction with our Investigators, developed several more investigative leads and surveillance footage from various properties extending as far north as Sunny Isles jurisdiction. Officer Waisman observed an individual matching the description on the Collins Avenue corridor. The information obtained from this encounter was a critical component in the investigation and identification of the perpetrator. Through the collaborative efforts and teamwork by our officers and investigators, the police department has positively identified the individual responsible for the March 22, 2019 incident. Our officers, in conjunction with several local law enforcement agencies, are actively working to locate and apprehend this individual.
