COMMISSION MEETING
JANUARY 14, 1981

Also attending: Attorney, John Randolph, Manager, William E. Gwynn,
Deputy Town C1erk,Barbara Gwynn, Police Consultant Frank Flannery.
The meeting was called to order at 9 A. M. by Mayor Koch.
Mayor Koch explained the reason for this special meeting, is to consider the
appointment of a Chief of Police.
Police Commissioner Bettison gave a recap of the search for a new Chief. He
noted that one of the candidates, Mr. Rich, would not be available for work
until the first of March. The other candidate would be available immediately.
After a general discussion, Commissioner Bettison moved that Mr. Greer be
hired on a probationary basis. Vice Mayor LaPorte seconded the motion.
Commissioner Hunter cast his vote in favor of the Police Commissioner's
recommendation. Mayor Koch called the question. Three in favor, Commissioner
Clements and Mayor Koch against. Mayor Koch stated he was not voting because
he was not in favor of Mr. Greer being appointed as Police Chief, only that he
felt more time was needed for a more indepth investigation. After a general
discussion Commissioner Hunter stated that he felt it very important that the
five Commissioners are together on their decision and withdrew his vote. Vice
Mayor LaPorte withdrew her vote. Commissioner Bettison withdrew his motion.
Commissioner Hunter moved to recind the previous action. This was seconded
by Commissioner Clements, motion passed.
The Commission set a tentative Commission Meeting for January 22, 1981, at
9 A.M.
Meeting adjourned at 9:25 A.M.
