VII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. Recruiting New Members - Ms. Rozie Carrillo, Recreation
Superintendent II is working on recruiting members to join the Veterans
Affairs Council. Not all funds were used for the Veterans Day Program
so she will pay for an ad in the Press Telegram or try to get a local
business to sponsor an ad. She will arrange for a press release to run in
the Lynwood `n Perspective newsletter. She hopes the Veterans Affairs
Council will get the attention it deserves. Chairperson Wood stated that
anything that can be done to boost membership is good.
SCHEDULED MATTERS: Continued
Ms. Carrillo has learned from Marine Sergeant Major Alanez that
military recruitment for the City of Lynwood is very low. There are
only two (z) Lynwood recruits serving in active duty. Many residents
want to join the armed forces, but they do not qualify for one reason or
another. Chairperson Wood commented that the closest reserve training
centers are located in the cities of Long Beach and Pasadena. Ms. Carrillo
stated that Lynwood High School is always recruiting for the military.
VIII. PUBLIC ORALS: Irene Garcia, Lynwood resident at z737 tii`h Street,
asks if it would be possible to start the Veterans Day Program on time
next year. Chairperson Wood stated that this year there was a delay due
to waiting for middle school students to arrive. He stated that the Board
Members have always prided themselves in starting the program
promptly at io a.m. and finishing at a a.m.
Chairperson Wood commented that the Hollydale American Legion will
not be participating in the City of Lynwood Veterans Day Program any
longer. They no longer even participate in the South Gate Christmas
Parade. They only participate in the Downey Christmas Parade.
Pearline Calderon, Lynwood resident at 4oto Josephine Street inquires
about Vice Chairperson Joe Battle. No one on the Veterans Affairs
Council knows the current status of Vice Chairperson Battle's health.
Mrs. Calderon stated that she recently attended a Salute to Veterans at
the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. The event included all military
branches, speakers, entertainment, food booths, etc. It was a very
impressive event.
IX. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
- FORD - No comment
- WOOD -Chairperson Wood commented that it's a shame that more
Veterans don't take an interest in this Council. He stated that he
recently went to see the Green Bay Navy Ship in Long Beach. There
were approximately 5,00o visitors in attendance and he wasn't able to
get close to the ship.
- PEREZ -Absent
