CALL TO ORDER: The meeting for April z8, zoo8 was called to order at 5:06 p.m. II. INVOCATION: The Invocation was led by Chairperson Charles Wood. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Julio Mendoza led the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. ROLL CALL: Present CHAIRPERSON WOOD VICE CHAIRPERSON BATTLE BOARD MEMBER CALDERON BOARD MEMBER FORD BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA BOARD MEMBER BEIMER Absent BOARD MEMBER WILLIAMS BOARD MEMBER PEREZ V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City Clerk for the April zoo8 meeting. VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Wood calls for a motion on the minutes for March zoo8. Vice Chairperson Battle motions that the minutes be approved with corrections. Board Member Mendoza seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes and the motion is passed. Correction to April minutes: Charles Wood should be listed as Chairperson. Joe Battle should be listed as Vice Chairperson. VII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: A. Cancel or reschedule May Meeting (Memorial Day 5/z6/o8) -The Board Members discuss whether they should reschedule or cancel the May zoo8 Veterans Affairs Council meeting as it is scheduled on the Memorial Day holiday and City Hall is closed. After a brief discussion the Board Members decide to cancel the meeting. Board Member Mendoza motions in favor of canceling the meeting. Vice Chairperson Battle seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously in favor of canceling the meeting and the motion is passed. VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: Continued B. Update on Veterans Day Program (Veterans Day it/ii/o8) - Ms. Rozie Carrillo stated that she met with Mr. Norman Powers, Woodshop Teacher at Lynwood High School. He is going to help provide the 5o white crosses needed for the Veterans Day Ceremony. Ms. Carrillo invites anyone that might be interested in attending her next meeting with Mr. Powers. Chairperson Wood stated that hopefully Mr. Powers would have time to meet on Wednesday of the following week. IX. PUBLIC ORALS: Pearline Calderon - 4oto Josephine Street, Lynwood - She announced that the City of Santa Clarita will be having a very interesting program on 5~z6~o8 for Memorial Day. She can supply an article to Ms. Carrillo on this. Vice Chairperson Battle presented Chairperson Wood and Board Member Beimer with flag and cross pins. Chairperson Wood said he would wear his proudly. Board Member Beimer gave his thanks for the emblem. Irene Garcia, z737 iii`h Street, Lynwood -Stated that she does not agree that Cinco de Mayo should be a City holiday. She does not think that staff should get a day off with pay. She believes a day should be set aside to inform and educate citizens on why this day is observed. Vice Chairperson Battle stated that he is a history buff and hails from the state of Texas. He explained the war between Mexico and Texas. Texas wanted to enter into the United States as a slave state. California and Texas fought so that these states would not be slave states. Chairperson Wood commented that all of these remarks have nothing to do with the Veterans Affairs Council. IX. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: - FORD - No comment - WOOD - Stated that at one time we also held a Memorial Day Ceremony. - PEREZ -Absent - CALDERON - No comment - MENDOZA -There will be an interment for his Father-in-law this Thursday. He was a veteran of Foreign Wars. Board Member Mendoza mentioned that he buried his wife in a military cemetery. - WILLIAMS -Absent - BEIMER - No comment IX. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: Continued - BATTLE -Stated that there is no charge for a military burial at Riverside National Cemetery. The plot is free and everything is furnished. You only have to pay for the opening/closing. You must provide a copy of the veteran's DDzt4. You can give a donation to the American Legion for serving. A home is being built for senior soldiers. It will cost $5o per month for them to reside there. X. ADJOURNMENT - No meeting will be held in the month of May. The Veterans Affairs Council will adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held at 5:0o p.m. on Monday, June z3, zoo8 in the Lynwood City Hall Council Chambers. recreatn\veterans affairs council zoo8.
