VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. REVIEW OF VETERANS DAY CEREMONY -Chairperson
Beimer stated that he thought the Veterans Day Ceremony was an
excellent program. Board Member Wood stated that he thought this
was one of the better programs in recent history. He passed out copies
of the program brochure to the Board Members in attendance. Mr.
Flores asked if the Board Members had any suggestions on how to
improve next year's program. Board Member Wood stated that he has
an idea and handed out copies of a newspaper article. The article was
accompanied by a photo of white crosses on the Lynwood High School
athletic field. The crosses were used to commemorate United States
veterans on Memorial Day by serving as symbolic grave site markers
for fallen soldiers. Board Member Wood would like to see this
component implemented into the usual Veterans Day Ceremony by
placing crosses on the front lawn at City Hall. Board Member Wood
also commented that he didn't realize that so many veterans came out
to the program. Chairperson Beimer stated he got a kick out of Jim
Morton who only served a few weeks on the City Council and got his
name on a memorial plaque! Chairperson Beimer stated that we better
get started on making crosses or we won't finish on time. Board
Member Wood stated that the crosses came from the Lynwood High
School woodshop. He stated that the crosses should face north. Mr.
Flores stated that research will be done on this project and information
will be brought back to a future meeting. Mayor Rodriguez was very
pleased with whole program. Board Member Wood thanked Mr.
Trejo for his hard work and stated that he's very grateful for the
monument. Mr. Trejo stated that he is glad that the Veterans Affairs
Council supported the memorial monument as well as Public Works
staff. Board Member Mendoza stated that for the first time out Mr.
Trejo did a great job on this project. Mr. Flores stated that the marble
slab came in today, November z6 and will be installed tomorrow
November z7. He asked the Board Members if they have any
suggestions for the plaque that will be replaced. They suggested
keeping it for future use in case of breakage and a replacement is
needed. Board Member Wood stated that the wreaths used for our
Veterans Day Program were given to the South Gate American
Legion for use in their program on ii/ii/o7. They invited him to their
event and acknowledged our great Veterans Day Program.
IX. PUBLIC ORALS: Irene Garcia, 2737 iii`h Street commented on the
beautiful presentation of the Veterans Memorial Monument.
