Christmas Gift Baskets:
Commissioner Jaimes suggested giving Christmas baskets to the people that attend the Women's
Power Half Hour event. She will get 10 turkeys for that day. She stated that she sent a letter to
Superior Super Warehouse and they are going to need more turkeys. Vice Chairperson
Rodriguez suggested asking for food donations from the City employees for the Christmas gift
baskets. Commission Herron stated that this item needs to be voted on before they proceed.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez asked for a vote to create Christmas Baskets for needy families.
Motion was made by Commissioner Herron and seconded by Commissioner Jaimes. The
Commissioners all stated aye and the ayes carried.
Vice Chairpersdn Rodriguez reopened the discussion and the Commissioners continue with the
item at hand. Commissioner Herron asked if Ms. Alderete promised any money out of her budget
to do this event. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez answered no, she stated that we are going to do
this ourselves.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez asked the Commissioners if they have decided on how the baskets
will be distributed. Commissioner Jaimes suggested calling the ladies that attended the Women's
Power Half Hour event to come and help distribute the baskets. She also suggested raffling off
the baskets. Commissioner Herron asked Commissioner Jaimes are you referring to the ladies
that attended the Women's Power Half Hour event? Commissioner Jaimes answered yes.
Commissioner Herron also suggested calling all the ladies that attended the event. She stated
that the ones who respond by coming out are the ones that will be able to participate in the raffle?
Commissioner Jaimes stated that she thinks the idea of a raffle is good, because they only have a
limited amount of turkeys. Commissioner Herron asked if there is a list of the people who came to
the Women's Power Half Hour event. Commission Jaimes stated that there was asign-in-sheet
with all the names and phone numbers.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez suggested asking the ladies that attended the event if they know of
any needy families, and if so, to give the Commissioners their names. Commissioner Jaimes
stated that she thinks by giving the gift baskets to the ladies that attended the event would be an
incentive and would keep them coming to their events. Commissioner Herron stated that if we do
give the gift baskets to the ladies that attended the event and they don't need the gift baskets,
then the baskets should be giving to someone that does. Commissioner Jaimes stated that some
of the people she knows need the assistance, because they live in garages.
Commissioner Herron stated that since we all go to different churches maybe we can go and find
out if the churches have five needy families. Commissioner Herron also suggested that next year
would be a better time to do this since it is a short notice. She stated, because we need to do this
a month are two before we plan the giveaway. She stated that this way we will have the time to
get the Pastors approval for the requested food items. She stated that they also might be able to
do something for Easter.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez suggested asking the City employees to donate can food for the gift
baskets. Commissioner Herron stated that if the Commission wanted to request donations from
the City employees we should have requested this two months ago.
Commissioner Herron stated that the City usually has boxes of food donations out in the lobby,
but the City has not done that lately. She stated that the donations in prior years were for Rozie's
program the "Community Service Day". Commissioner Herron also stated that anytime the
Commissioners want to request donations for gift baskets for Christmas, they should start in
September or October.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they started getting donations at one of the school just
this week. Commissioner Herron stated that as a Commission, we have to get approval in order
to get food donations from the City employees. Commissioner Herron suggested to first get a
date for the gift baskets give-away. She suggested calling Bateman Hall to see if they have a
room available for about 29 to 30 people.
Commissioner Jaimes suggested bringing extra items in order to fill the gift baskets that they will
be giving away. Commissioners Herron stated that there is a store located on Mona and Industry
2
before the give-away. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez called Bateman Hall to reserve a room for the
give-away. Commissioner Herron spoke with Bateman Hall staff and reserved room #2 and also
a place to store the food items.
Planning for 2009 Events:

events that we are going to do in 2009. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that she will bring copies to
the next meeting. She also reminded the Commissioners that the list that was put together for the
Women's Power Half Hour is in the July minutes.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez mentioned that the Women of the Month program is approaching and
it will be in March. Commissioner Herron stated that if we can get donations and sponsors for the
event we can let the Council know and get their approval for what we are planning to do. Vice
Chairperson asked the Commissioners to keep in mind the events they would like to plan in the
month of March. Commissioner Jaimes asked are March, June, and September the three months
that we will have events. Commissioner Herron stated yes, those are the three month.
Information on a performance -Flowers Aren't Enough:
Vice Chairperson asked what this item is.
Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that this is information that Ms. Alderete requested to be put on the
agenda. She stated that Ms. Alderete is not here to explain this to you, but she will give them the
information so they can go over it for the next meeting. She stated that you can decide if this is
something you would like to do. Commissioner Herron suggested putting this item on the next
agenda for discussion and Ms. Alderete can give us more detail.
Board Orals:
Commissioner Herron stated that she thinks the meeting went well and that the Commissioners
are working together better.
Commissioner Jaimas suggested having more planning. She also stated to elect a new
Chairperson and she stated that she would like for the Commissioners to all work together. She
stated that everything they plan should be put on the table ahead of time, so the Commissioners
will know what has been discussed and make all the decisions together.
Commissioner Real stated that she came to the Senior Center for the Earthquake Shakeout event
to help. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated that she was told to meet at the Senior Center at 9:00
a.m. she stated that she was there for one hour and left at 10:00 a.m.
Commissioners Herron stated that she did not get a call. She stated that it was in the minutes that
Ms. Alderete said that she would give us a call. Commissioner Real stated that when an event is
planned it needs to be discussed with all the Commissioners. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated
that is why we need a calendar so that when we decide to have an event it will be on the calendar.

where the Commissioners could get food items for 50 cent. She suggested they go on Saturdays
only from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. she stated that this store has all kind of food items. She
suggested checking the prices there, because it is even better than the 99 cent store.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez suggested setting a date to come and prepare the gift baskets and
the give-away. Commissioners Herron stated that they needed a place to store the food items
until the time for the give-away. She suggested calling Bateman Hall to see if they have a place
where the food items can be stored. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez asked the Commissioners what
date they would be available to prepare the baskets. There was a continued discussion on the
date for preparation for the baskets. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez asked the Commissioners to
bring the items when they get them and put them in storage. Chairperson Rodriguez suggested
making 20 baskets.
Commissioner Jaimes suggested having the ladies that attended the Women's Power Half Hour
event to come and help prepare the gift baskets. Commissioner Jaimes stated that we decided to
give the gift baskets to the people that came to the Women Power Half Hour event. Vice
Chairperson Rodriguez stated to Commissioner Jaimes that we have not decided yet on whom to
give the baskets to, it is just a discussion. Commissioner Jaimes stated that we will issue out gift
baskets to people that come; we will not discriminate against anyone.
Commissioner Real stated that we are planning on 45 people that will be at the give-away, 20
baskets will not be enough. Commissioner Herron stated that we are going to have a raffle,
because there will not be enough baskets for that amount of people. Commission Herron stated
that the only people that she knows in need are the seniors that she buys for every month. Vice
Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they only have two weeks to prepare for the gift basket give-
away.
Commissioner Herron stated to have a general agreement for a rafFle and invite the list of people
that attended our last event Women's Power Half Hour to the gift basket give-away as was stated
by Commissioner Jaimes. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez asked fora general agreement all
Commissioners agreed by saying aye.

morning to prepare the gift baskets. The Commissioners agreed on meeting at Bateman Hall at
9:00 a.m. to prepare the gift baskets. Commissioner Herron suggested raffling off the gift baskets
at 10:30 a.m. The date for the give-away is December 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated that it will be hard for her to meet at Bateman Hall at 9:00 a.m.
because she will be delivering about 120 Christmas baskets to different schools here in Lynwood.
Commissioner Herron asked if it would be better to put the baskets together with the food items a
week before the give-away with the exception of the perishables, and store the food items in the
storage room. Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they have a week to bring the food items
3
She stated that she likes working with an agenda; she does not like to be giving information at a
last minutes notice. Commissioner Herron stated that the Commissioners did not have any
notification on the Earthquake event. She also stated that this item was not brought to the
Commissioners for discussion and was not on the agenda. She also stated that it was discussed
at the Women's Power Half Hour event which is totally against the Brown Act. Commissioner
Jaimes stated that she thinks this event should have been an event put on by the Senior Advisory
Council not the Women's Commission, because they are separate boards. Vice Chairperson
Rodriguez stated that it is important that we all make decisions together.
Public Orals:
Mr. Goodloe made a suggestion regarding the Commissions 2009 event. He stated that the
Women's month program last year was geared toward mature women, such as professional
women and those in business. He suggested that maybe the Commissioners might consider
honoring young ladies that are becoming women for their 2009 event. Mr. Goodloe stated that the
Commission might want to think about an event that would showcase young ladies from high
school, college or a young single parent. He stated, just to acknowledge that group of women to
show them that Lynwood cares about them.
Vice Chairperson Rodriguez stated that this is a good idea and that maybe the Commission can
plan an event for March. All the Commissioners agreed that this is a good idea and that they will
consider an event such as this to acknowledge the younger women.
Commissioner Herron made a motion to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Commissioner
Real. The meeting adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
