City of Lynwood Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday, January 8, 2008 3:00 P.M. City Council Chambers Call to Order: Commissioner Dorothy Plummer-Jones called the meeting to order at 3:00 PM. Pledge of Allegiance: Commissioner Ethel Pacheco led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call: Chairperson Margaret Araujo-Absent Commissioner Dorothy Plummer-Jones-Present Commissioner Ethel Pacheco-Present Commissioner Maly Sue Lewis-Present Commissioner Sylvia Herron-Present Attendees Lorene Reed, Friend Alice Corona, YWCA Greater Los Angeles Sexual Assault Crisis Services, guest Consuelo Marshall, Staff Liaison Lisset Morales, Minutes Clerk Certification of Agenda Punting: Agenda was duly posted. Commissioner Plummer-Jones called for a motion Lo approve the correction of the November 13, 2007 minutes and the minutes of the December I I, 2007 meeting as read. Commissioner Herron moved ro approve corrections to the November 13 meeting and the December 11 minuses and seconded by Commissioner Pacheco. Alice Corona, YWCA Greater Los Angles, Sexual Assault Crisis Services presented information on services available to victims of sexual assault in the City of Lynwood. She distributed 2006 data of Lynwood crimes, including sexual assaults. The data compared Lynwood crimes with national crime statistics. She also gave information on registered sex offenders. Alice Corona noted that although Lynwood's sexual assault rate is slightly less than the national average, minority community victims often do not report sexual assaults to local law enforcement In addition, she prescntcd facts and myths regarding sexual assault perpeU~ators and their victims. The YWCA will provide free counseling to rape victims and transportation to the nearest hospital. The YWCA also has a 24 hour rape crisis hotline. Ms. Corona indicated that she would like to work with the City to provide services, such as self-defense courses, to community members xnd city staff. Her goal is to work with the commission and other community mcmbas to raise awareness on sexual assaults and to provide the YWCA's free resources to the City of Lynwood. The ?008 Women's Commission calendar was distributed to commissioners and friends of the commission with corrections requested at the December meeting. Commissioner Herron motioned to approve the ?008 Women's Commission Calendar and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Lewis. The ?008 Women's Commission Calendar was approved. l Discussion followed the 2008 Planning agenda item. Staff suggested that planning for upcoming events begin early to ensure an organized event. The Annual Women's History Luncheon will lake place on March 20, 2008 from I 1 AM l0 2 PM. Commissioners suggested that the procedures for selection of the awards should be discussed at Uie February meeting. Commissioners discussed the effectiveness of current selection guidelines and the number of awards. It was agreed that honorees should live or work in Lynwood. Commissioner Plummer-Jones called for a motion to change number of honorees from 5 to 3 honorees and one guest speaker. Commissioner Herron motioned to change the number of honorees from 5 to 3 with a guest speaker and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Pacheco. Staff will bring a list of award categories to the February meeting. During Uie Public Orals portion of the meeting, Lorene Reed, Friend, noted that the meeting was outstanding and extremely informative. Lorene Reed also noted that Lhe March 20 Annual Women's Luncheon will require advance planning. She suggested that the "Gifts of Love" Toy Drive tellers be sent in the next month. Staff informed commissioners of Lynwood City Council's action to reorganization City Commissions. Some of the existing commissions were consolidated and a few are still pending review by the City Council. Commissioner Lewis requested that staff continue Lo provide members with National Association of Commissions for Women newsletters and other information. Staff will provide NACW newsletters and information at the February meeting. Staff asked commissioners if Lhey had received their check stipends and commissioners informed staff that checks for the October meeting had not been received. Staff will ask Finance staff about Lhe checks and get back to members as to the status oP the stipends. Staff passed out Commissioner business cards created by Lisset Morales. Commissioner Plummer-Jones called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was moved by Commissioner Herron and seconded by Commissioner Pacheco to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 3:59 PM. 2
