City Council Chambers Call to Order: Chair Araujo called the meeting to order at 3:00 PM. Pledge of Allegiance: Commissioner Dorothy Plummer-Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance Attendees Roll Call: Lorene Reed, Friend Chairperson Margaret Araujo-Present Pearline Calderon, Friend Commissioner Dorothy Plummer-Jones-Present Halle Johnson, guest of Pearline Calderon Commissioner Ethel Pacheco-Present Lien Stringfield, Friend Commissioner Mary Sue Lewis-Present Alice Corona, YWCA Greater Los Angeles Commissioner Sylvia Herron-Present Sexual Assault Crisis Services, guest Consuelo Marshall, Minutes Clerk Certification of Agenda Posting: Agenda was duly posted. Chair Araujo called for a motion to approve the minutes as read. Commissioner Herron made a correction to the minutes on paragraph three. The vote was not to combine any donated toys with the Parks and Recreation event, but to call a special meeting of the Women's Commission to decide what to do with the toys. The motion was moved by Commissioner Hen-on and seconded by Commissioner Pacheco to approve the minutes with corrections as noted above. Staff distributed a 2008 calendar with dates of commission meetings and events. The legend was explained by staff. Members questioned the date for events at Bateman Hall Corrections will be made the revised calendar passed out at the January meeting. Members discussed the upcoming Commissioner's dinner. Staff requested that members ask community members to RSVP for the event. For the Planning agenda item, Chair Araujo suggested that the members postpone 2008 planning until after the New Year. Chair Araujo mentioned that the new City Council may be taking a good look at all current City Commissions after the holidays. Members again requested that staff provide them each with a small amount of business cards. Staff responded that we could do for them and pass them out at the January meeting. During the Public Orals portion of the meeting, Lorene Reed, Friend mentioned that several community members had expressed interest in being a Friend. A suggestion was made to give prospective Friends a copy of the 2008 calendar so that they would know when meetings were held. Lorene Reed suggested that Friends could be invited to the Commissioner Gala. Irene Gare~a stated that the Commissioner's events should start on time and have a limited program. Chair Araujo ~. ,~, mentioned that staff wanted to do less for the Bala and the Mayor and City Council were interested in a more lavish event. Pearline Calderon, Friend, said that City Council members will always want time to address Commissioners. She praised the Women's Commission saying that they were doing a fantastic job with a new direction and focus. She ended by wishing everyone a joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year. Guest, Alice Corona, from the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, introduced herself and passed out flyers on their self defense class for women. She explained the services of the YWCA to members and invited them ro fake the class. Chair Araujo invited Alice ro speak at the January meeting and to provide members with more information and Lynwood sexual assault statistics. Commissioner Herron told members about the Senior Center F3outique, Santa Exchange and other holiday events. Chair Araujo called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was moved by Commissioner Herron and seconded by Commissioner Pacheco to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM.
