I'm following up formally on my earlier discussion with you regarding the trackless trolley service in Belmont and Watertown (the #71 and #73 routes respectively). During work on the Belmont Street and Trapelo Road some months ago, the trolley service was abandoned for bus service. After the road work was completed, trolley service was reinstituted. During the past, my Board of Selectmen had been concerned with the number of utility poles and support poles on those roads. The Board was interested in a discussion we had about petitioning the MBTA to eliminate the trolley system and replace it permanently with buses (currently the trolley does not run on Sundays; It is replaced by bus service). Representatives of the MBTA, though at a lower level, stated that if this was ever to occur, Cambridge and Watertown had to be included because they too also had this system within their communities. I am inquiring if you believe that Watertown may be interested in heading into this direction also. If so, this may be another project that the two of us can work on regionally. I am looking forward to your response. If there are any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. Thomas G.
