March 2009 Event /DVD Performance "Flowers Aren't Enough" on Domestic Violence:
Chairperson Rodriguez asked Ms. Alderete if she had information on the performance "Flowers
Aren't Enough." Ms. Alderete stated that she contacted the organization and was informed that
their fee for the performance is $2,500. She stated that she explained to the representative that
we are a city and we have no budget for the Women's Commission events. Ms. Alderete stated
that the representative suggested to see if the Commission could partner with someone else to
help pay for the performance. Ms. Alderete stated that the performance was provided to her on a
DVD. She stated that she did not know if we have to get permission to use the DVD are not. Ms.
Alderete also stated that if we have a small group she doesn't think the Commission would have
to get permission. She also stated that if we invite a large group of about a 100 people we need
to get permission to use the DVD.
Ms. Alderete suggested having a panel that could speak on the topic of "Domestic Violence" and
have resources available regarding the topic. She suggested getting organizations from the
community, such as the YWCA and other organizations to attend the event. She stated that the
Commission could always show the DVD and this will help start conversations regarding domestic
violence. Commissioner Araujo stated that she was not at the last two meetings, but she did
receive the agenda. She stated that domestic violence is a good topic for the next Women's
Power Half Hour event. She stated that $2,500 is too much to pay for the performance. She also
stated that she did not think the Women's Commission should charge for their events.
Commissioner Araujo stated that she thinks the Women's Commission should leave it up to Ms.
Alderete to correspond with the performer and make the arrangements. Chairperson Rodriguez
asked will this be a live performance, are will we use the DVD. Commissioner Araujo stated that
Ms. Alderete has the DVD.
Commissioner Araujo also stated that she thinks domestic violence will be a good topic for
Women's History Month. Commission Araujo stated that she was going to suggest to Ms.
Alderete regarding a group from the County that could come and speak on this topic and give
information and brochures. Commissioner Araujo stated that she will call this agency and try to
get some information from them. Commissioner Araujo asked Ms. Alderete to call the county, for
a list of non-profit organizations.
Ms. Alderete stated that she thinks it is a great idea to have someone from the Sheriff's
department to present a presentation on domestic violence for the Women's Power Half Hour
event. She stated that the original discussion is set for 30 minutes. But she suggested having the
discussion for an hour and focus on specifics like resources for domestic violence. Commissioner
Araujo mentioned that her daughter presented a presentation at Wilson Elementary School. Ms.
Alderete stated that this is only a suggestion.
Commissioner Araujo stated that maybe we could invite some of the High School girls to the
Women's Power Half Hour event. She stated that there are many young girls being abused by
their boyfriends and the girls don't know where to go and get help. Vice Chairperson Jaimes
stated that she has information at her home regarding domestic violence. Ms. Alderete stated that
the DVD is a monologue about different types of women such as, business women, educated
women, etc. She explained that in the DVD the performer talks about how she didn't know that
she was in an abusive relationship. Ms. Alderete stated that there should be a separate
Women's Power Half Hour event for the High Schools students.
Commissioner Araujo stated that she thinks that the Commission should have some of the High
School students at this event. She stated, but we will first have to speak to the school counselor
in regard to information pertaining to students that are being abused. She stated that the LUSD
will supply buses to transport the students to the event. Commissioner Araujo also stated that if
the Commission thinks this event would not be the appropriate time to have the students attend,
maybe we will be able to have an event just for the students.
Chairperson Rodriguez suggested that the Women's Commission could schedule another event
for the students. She also suggested that the Women's Commission could even go to the High
Schools and have an event, but first they might need the permission from the parents.
Chairperson Rodriguez also suggested staying with their first plan for March Women's Power Half
Hour event.
Vice Chairperson Jaimes suggested using the same topic "Domestic Violence" for their next
Women's Power Half Hour event in June. She suggested inviting someone from the Sheriff's
Department that works with domestic violence to present a presentation. Commissioner Herron
stated that the topic for June is on "Finance". Chairperson Rodriguez asked each Commissioner
to check their calendar in order to stay on track of the topics for 2009 events. Chairperson
Rodriguez asked for a motion to just show the DVD of "Flowers Aren't Enough" and not have the
live performance.
Commissioner Real suggested that some of the women could share their experience of abuse to
the other women. Ms. Alderete stated, you mean a testimonial. Commissioner Real answered
yes. Commissioner Araujo made a motion to show the DVD, a Testimonial and a Q & A period,
seconded by Vice Chairperson Jaimes. All agreed by saying aye.
Commissioner Herron asked, what is the date of the event? Ms. Alderete stated that we have not
selected a date yet. Commissioner Araujo asked if the Women's Power Half Hour event is being
held in the place of the Women's Luncheon. She stated, because that is the event where we
honor women's accomplishments. Commissioner Herron stated that per council the Women's
Luncheon was taken off the calendar three or four months ago due to the budget. She also stated
that the Commission can get donations if they want to have events like the Women's Luncheon.
Commissioner Araujo stated that if we could get donations we can have the Women's Luncheon.
She stated that the Woman's Luncheon is a tradition and she would hate to see it cancelled.
Commissioner Araujo stated that between all of the Women Commissioners, she thinks that if they
put their heads together they could get someone to donate food and items for the Women's
Luncheon. She stated that they could have a small event and honor only women from Lynwood
and have the Luncheon in room 1 or 2 at Bateman Hall.
Commissioner Herron stated that she thought when they voted on the four Women's Power Half
Hour events, that these events were to take the place of the Women's Luncheon and the other
larger events they've had in the pass. She stated that they voted to do four Women's Power Half
Hour events for the calendar year 2009. Chairperson Rodriguez stated that the Commissioners
agreed and understood that they were not going to have the large events, because of the budget.
She stated having the Luncheon will cost a few thousand dollars and we don't have a budget.
Commissioner Araujo stated that the manager at Home Town Buffet said when ever the Women's
Commission needed his help to just let him know. She state that he could provide the lunch and
staff could make the certificates. Commissioner Araujo stated that since the Commission has
already decided not to have the Luncheon it is fine with her.
Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that the Commission needs to make changes in the rules when
nominations are made for the honorees. She stated, because people should not be able to
nominate themselves. Commission Herron stated that they discussed and agreed on this issue
last year. She also stated that they don't have to discuss any changes, because the event will not
be held anymore.
3
Chairperson Rodriguez suggested that in the future if the Commission wants to recognize
Women's accomplishments we could do it at our Women's Commission meetings. Vice
Chairperson Jaimes suggested having Women honored every three months at the Women's
Commission meetings. Chairperson Rodriguez asked if all the Commissioners agreed. All the
Commissioners agreed.
Board Orals:
Commissioner Herron mentioned securing Bateman Hall a week or a few days before Easter to
make the Easter baskets. Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they agreed to make the baskets for
the Women' Power Half Hour event. Commissioner Herron stated that she thought the decision
was to make the baskets for Easter.
Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they discussed that, but they agreed that the baskets should
be giving out at the Women's Power Half Hour event. She stated that it was also suggested to put
ribbon on chairs with different colors. Commissioner Herron stated, you said under the chairs.
Chairperson Rodriguez answered yes, you are right, under the chairs.
Commissioner Herron stated that we have $50 from Value Plus. Chairperson Rodriguez asked
what date will we prepare the baskets. Commissioner Herron suggested the morning of the event
around 9:00 a.m. Commissioner Herron asked what will be purchased with the $50. She also
asked do we have to use the $50 all at once, are can we supplement what we need and use the
rest later. Commissioner Araujo suggested using part of the $50 and using the rest for a gift
certificate.
Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that she can go to Home Town Buffet and request coffee and
other items for that day. Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they will all bring items for the
baskets. Commissioner Herron stated that they need to know what items they will need. Ms.
Alderete stated just think of what you will serve with a turkey, like stuffing, vegetables, etc.
Chairperson Rodriguez stated that they will prepare ten baskets. Commissioner Herron stated
that we will use the $50 to supplement for other items. Commissioner Herron stated that she has
ten cans of vegetables, ten pop corns, twenty cups of soup, nine juices and nine macaroni. She
stated that we need one more juice and macaroni and we will have ten of each. Chairperson
Rodriguez stated that she will bring ten of each items as well. Commission Araujo stated that she
will bring some of the same items that she brought for the senior's event. Vice Chairperson
Jaimes stated that they will need a letter prepared in order to request for food items and
donations.
Ms. Alderete stated that she will prepare the letter. Chairperson Rodriguez stated that we really
need to set up a date for the event. Ms. Alderete stated that she will get back to everyone today
regarding the date. She also stated that they have already chosen optional dates, March 16 and
March 23.
4
Chairperson Rodriguez asked which date are we going to schedule for the event. Ms. Alderete
stated that both of these dates are on a Monday. Commissioner Herron suggested getting what
ever date is available. Ms. Alderete asked if the Commissioners would like to have the event on a
Wednesday or Thursday. She also stated that they could try for Thursday, March 19 or Thursday,
March 26. Ms. Alderete state that she will look into scheduling a date for the event.
Public Orals:
Ms. Alderete stated that Councilman Morton asked if we as the Women's Commission would
adjourn the meeting in the honor of longtime Women's Commissioner Della Mazzoti who passed
away this week. Commissioner Araujo made a motion to adjourn the Women's Commission
meeting in the honor of Della Mazzoti seconded by Commissioner Herron.
Chairperson Rodriguez asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Araujo made a
motion to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Commissioner Real. The meeting adjourned at
