Senior Building Fund Report: Vice President Lorene Reed - We have $4,000.00 dollars that was donated from the bingo club for a bingo board. We also have money that was donated for dishes, piano and other various items. Staff has asked us as the Senior Advisory Board how we want the money to be distributed or do we want staff to make the decision on what items need to be purchased for the center. Question & Answers uestion: You stated that some of the money has been designated already? Vice President Lorene Reed Answer: Some of the money that was donated was for a specific purpose. When the ground breaking ceremony took place $1,000.00 dollars was donated for an appliance at the request of the donor. Member Alfred Kilts -We as a board are responsible for the money so I think we should have some say as to how it is spent and the quantity that is given for the item. uestion: Do you have a list of what the needs would be so we can go over it? Answer: No we don't. Member Willie McGill Comment: We did have $1,000.00 dollars for a piano, but 1 don't know if that would cover the piano. Mrs. Fields donated the $1,000.00. Vice President Lorene Reed Answer: We did have $1,000.00 specifically for a piano and one of the members here had a piano donated to the center so the $1,000.00 that Mrs. Fields donated can be used for something else. We have a piano, organ and a television. Do we want to communicate to staff the necessary items that are needed for the center or do we want to make the decision of what is needed? *Alfred Kilts Motioned, 2nd Margaret Araujo, by majority vote staff will come to the board with any expenditure or request for money from the Senior Building fund. Vice President Lorene Reed - At this point I need permission to rearrange the agenda because Mr. Darren Dunaway -Senior Service Director of Human Services Association is present. Margaret Araujo Motioned, 2"d Irene Garcia, by unanimous consent motion passed. Senior Mea-s Provider Human Services Association: Darren Dunaway, Senior Services Director I want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve the residents of Lynwood and we hope that our service is up to your standards. The first couple of days that we have been in the City of Lynwood the majority of the people have been happy with the food and service. We believe in bringing a good level of professionalism in serving seniors. Our company has been in this business for 30 years. We have 17 sites including the City of Lynwood. We are big as far as providers go in the County. We feel that our site managers do a good job with the support of staff such as me, have a real accountability when something goes wrong or right. Our food is good quality; just because we were the lower bid that doesn't mean that our food is worse or cheaper. We get funds from the Federal government to run our program. The money that we get from the City of Lynwood helps us support the program so it can be affordable for cities. Victoria is the Human Service Association site manager for the City of Lynwood. We also serve meals to home-bound clients in the City of Lynwood. We have drivers that deliver hot meals Monday through Friday. Our agency is focused on delivering hot meals and not frozen to seniors that are home-bound. Unfortunately we don't have the funding to deliver meals seven days a week. Once a year we have an opportunity to change the menu. We invite you to eat with us. We ordered new signs and banners to make it look professional. We currently serve about 2,000 meals a day which are processed in our kitchen in Long Beach. We work with an agency that cooks food for Juvenile Halls, Hospitals, Senior Programs and other venues. We hope to maintain a high level of quality for the City of Lynwood and try to make it a friendly environment. Questions. Answers & Comments Member Margaret Araujo Comment: I have been hoping and wishing for something like this to come along because some of our seniors were not being treated fairly. If you hold up to your menu 1 think the seniors will be pleased. 1 am really looking forward to this. 2 Member Irene Garcia Comment: 1 would like to welcome you. Member Julio Mendoza uestion: Where are you located? Answer: Our main office is in Bell Gardens and our kitchen is in Long Beach. uestion: How often does your menu rotate? Answer: The maximum amount that the County uses is a six-week cycle, but ours is a twelve-week cycle. Every six-weeks you will see the same items, but what we try to do is have an A Entry and B Entry. There aze exceptions to that; let's say they like roast beef, we try to incorporate it more in the menu. uestion: Is this also comparable and accountable for diabetics? Answer: Diabetics need to monitor themselves like they know how to, bu[ the way the program runs its in no way shape or form considered to be a specialized or medically approved diet. Secretary Pearline Calderon uestion: How often do you give a choice menu? Answer: We vary it and what the County has said is they want it once a month. In our sixteen sites when we first introduced the "choice" it was too confusing to the volunteers, and seniors and site managers did not want it. Vice President Lorene Reed Comment: It looks Tike the seniors are pleased. I was here for the transition and an advantage to the new program is once everyone is served, they are able to ge[ seconds if any food is lefr over. Senior Center: Kenneth Kahn - I spoke with Engineering and Public Works and they have given the contractor until January 25, 2007 to wrap-up the interior. They're laying the file and putting in the carpet. If any of you have had any construction you know that's usually the last step after painting. The interior of the center should be done by the end of this month. Vice President Lorene Reed - [f we have the grand opening in early spring f would be happy. Member Margaret Araujo - We can have an Easter ground-breaking. Amend Article 18: Vice President Lorene Reed - In our last meeting we had Article 18 and today we need to do the first three readings before we can amend that article. D. Joyce Edner -Read Article 18 Margaret Araujo Motioned, 2"' D. Joyce Edner, by unanimous consent motion passed. Senior Pageant 2007: Vice President Lorene Reed - Staff as well as the seniors want to have a pageant. The Mazketing Division staff will be helping us put this pageant on. They will primarily be doing most of the work. I am going to ask Margaret Araujo to meet with staff and bring back any information to us on what our part will be in putting on this pageant. A lot of people wanted a Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood. Member Araujo will determine whether we need to set up a committee or what part staff wants the board to play, because the Senior Advisory Board is the host of the Senior Pageant. Secretary Pearline Calderon - As being the Founder and Pageant Chair of the Mrs. Senior Pageant it was my dream that we expanded upon to make this true. I am asking to be able to work with Margaret. Vice President Lorene Reed - At this point it is not needed because when Mrs. Culp was the president she asked everyone for ideas to fundraise to bring in money. Member Calderon had brought up the idea of having a Senior Pageant and it was successful. We have not been able to have a second pageant because of the way things happened during the first pageant. I realize that it was a dream of yours but it is also of the boazd to be able to continue having pageants and in order to do so, staff will be coordinating and the Senior Advisory Board will host the event. It will be up to Member Margaret Araujo once she meets with staff to determine whether a committee is necessary. Member Lien Stringfield - [was very excited to be in the pageant. I brought my son's girlfriend to help out with the pageant and someone said she could not assist and that made me want to quit the pageant but I had already made a commitment. Vice President Lorene Reed -What we want is a new concept to improve and enhance the pageant in order to be able to continue with the pageant. We are going to let go of the past and move forward in a positive manner. A lot of issues come out later. We have a better working relationship with staff and it makes a difference. Member Margaret Araujo will establish whether or not there will be a need for a committee. Secretary Pearline Calderon - If I can remember well, the board had voted to have an annual pageant. So that's on record. As far as staff was concerned Mrs. Reed did not want staff to work along with the Senior Advisory Board. She wanted the pageant to be solely done by the Senior Advisory Board. I am happy to see that we can come together with [he City and staff to make this event bigger and better for seniors. The seniors received rewards from this production. The City has never had a proclamation from the President. ] wrote to the President of the United States and the Governor and received letters from them. We had news stations, book authors, movie writers and screen directors. All of this came and [ am not trying to pat myself on the back. Vice President Reed -Let's stop right here, let me correct you. You were the chair of that and it was because of you that the child had to walk home to Compton because you put her out of there. No one knew that any of this was going on until after So I am going to stop you right here. This is teamwork and we are the Senior Advisory Board. We have worked too hard to gain the respect. We are going to work as a team and whoever we choose as the next chair will represent the board and needs to be respected as the chair. Goals 2007: Vice President Lorene Reed - We are going to work as a team. We are going to devote our next meeting to work on ow goals for 2007. 1 am going to ask Margaret to get with staff to set up our retreat for next month. We are going to meet here and we are going to work on our goals. In March we will have a nominating committee. Vice President Reed- Staff please contact Starr for pictures. Member Irene Garcia -1 use the Dial-A-Taxi to go for labs at Kaiser I called for spick-up at 6:30 a.m. so I can be first, second or third at Kaiser. At 6:15 a.m. a driver arrived blasting his horn. 1 called the supervisor and told her that I specifically asked fora 6:30 a.m. pick-up not 6:15 a.m. I spoke to Adriana and she gave me the direct number for the Complaints Department, 310-965-5806. I spoke with Joyce and she apologized. Member Frank Calderon -Nothing Secretary Pearline Calderon - I want the record to show that f was attacked in this meeting. I was not given the time to respond even though 1 asked for it. I don't have to defend myself. Those are all accusations and lies and yes it's time for us to move on and be positive and work together as a group. Member Julio Mendoza -Nothing Member Willie McGill - fs the taxi going to change at all? Vice President Lorene Reed -Not yet, we have to look into it and get some information on it. We are not sure yet. Member Marie Lindsey -1 am learning a lot and 1 appreciate it Member D. Joyce Edner - I have a comment. Can't we all just get along? All the issues we discuss are for the seniors, let's receive the blessing and do what we have to do as a board together. We can accomplish more as a group than we can fighting one another. 1 appreciate each and every one of you. Vice President Lorene Reed - I appreciate all of you listening. 1 am certain that we are going to be very successful this year. We come in here with a purpose to help seniors, it's not about recognition. Wanting to help people, that's what we are here for. The comments lifted me up and that means so much to me. Adjournment: Vice President Lorene Reed made a motion to adjourn, by unanimous consent the meeting was adjourned at I :36 p.m.
