Construction of New Permanent Town Green Stage Begins on
Thursday, October 13, 2016
New stage will be in place for the Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting
ceremony on Friday, December 2, 2016.
Leesburg, VA (October 13, 2016) – Last May, a
truck crashed through the brick wall on the
second level of the Town Hall parking garage and
landed on the Town Green below, crushing the
two circular wrought iron benches near the doors
into the Town Hall lobby. Thankfully, the driver
was unharmed.
The accident gave town staff an opportunity to
rethink the design of that portion of the Town
Green. More than a dozen times a year, staff
erects a temporary stage in front of the benches
and extends electrical cables across the walkway to the outlets under the arcade on the east
side of the green, for events like the Flower and Garden Festival, the Acoustic on the Green
concert series and the annual Christmas Tree & Menorah Lighting ceremony. With the benches
out of the way, town staff suggested installing a permanent stage.
The King’s Masons, a masonry company from Manassas, Virginia, began construction of that
new permanent stage on Thursday, October 13, 2016. The stage will be 35 feet long at its
widest point and 11 feet deep. The stage platform will be 15 inches high with 21-inch seat walls
along a portion of the back of the stage. Multiple power outlets will be built into the stage to
provide electricity for events. The stage will be ADA accessible via portable ramps. The brick
and precast concrete will match existing similar elements on the Town Hall.
The stage was designed by Bill Ference, the town’s Parks & Open Space Planner. The Board of
Architectural Review approved the design on May 16, 2016. Construction costs for the stage
total $56,000.
