JJ. ¡o. 05-169 Date of Adoption M'!)' 19, 2005 RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE ELIMINATION OF THE URBAN ENTERPRISE ZONE SALES TAX EXEMPTION ON ELIGIBLE PURCHASES BY CERTIFIED BUSINESSES WHEREAS, under the UEZ program, certified businesses are eligible to make sales tax exempt purchases for on-site business purchase for capital improvements, equipment and materials; and WHEREAS, this benefit is the single most utilized UEZ tax benefit; and WHEREAS, the Governor in his proposed 2006 budget has recommended the elimination of this benefit and replacing it instead with a 50% sales tax rebate; and WHEREAS, this change will be a major disincentive for businesses certifying and re- certifying in the program; and WHEREAS, the reduction in UEZ certified businesses will result in a reduction of new job creation and ultimately an increase in unemployment in the state; and WHEREAS, any abuses in this program can be better addressed by simply better monitoring the existing benefit. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Carteret that: I. This Mayor and Council call upon the State Legislature to remove the proposed change in the UEZ program from the 2006 state budget. 2. Copies of this resolution should be sent to the Governor and the Legislative Delegation of Middlesex County. ---".-/ 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
