MEETING MINUTES
FEBRUARY z3, zoo9
I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting for February z3, zoo9 was called to
order at S:o7 p.m.
II. INVOCATION: The Invocation was led by Board Member John
Beimer.
III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by
Board Member Frank Calderon.
IV. ROLL CALL: Present Absent

V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City Clerk
for the February zoo9 meeting.
VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: In the absence of the Chairperson and the
Vice Chairperson, Ms. Rozie Carrillo, Recreation Superintendent II calls
for a motion to approve the minutes for January zoo9. Board Member
Ford makes a motion to approve the minutes. Board Member Beimer
seconds the motion. All Board Members vote in favor and the motion is
passed. Ayes:4 Noes: o
This is not an official vote since there was no quorum.
VII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. Recruiting New Members - Ms. Carrillo stated that she called Sgt.
Major Alvaniz, the recruiter at Lynwood High School last week to get
an update on recruiting new members but he hasn't returned her call.
Chairperson Beimer stated that he's invited two or three people to
come to the meetings. It sounds good to them but they just don't
follow-through and show up.
Board Member Mendoza stated that we need to recruit younger
veterans from recent wars. The older Veterans come to our events

and seem to show interest but they are too wispy-washy to attend
meetings.
Board Member Ford asks why it is that we can't recruit Veterans at
the Senior Center. Board Member Mendoza goes on to explain that
recruitment can only occur right before lunchtime to the general
audience and not just at any time of the day.
Ms. Carrillo stated that a Veterans Affairs Council press release has
been sent to the Media Division a couple of times but has yet to be
placed in the paper. She stated that she would talk to the Senior and
Social Services Manager about recruiting senior citizens at the Senior
Center.
VIII. PUBLIC ORALS: Lynwood resident Irene Garcia, z737 ii`i' Street, asked
if we could inquire about the status of Vice Chairperson Joe Battle's
health. Ms. Carrillo stated that when this was attempted before, when
Vice Chairperson Battle was still in the hospital, it was made very clear
by his wife that his condition would remain a private matter.
Ms. Garcia stated that as far as recruiting new members goes; someone
can go to the Senior Center at ii:zo a.m. and address the entire audience
on this topic. The person can't go from one table to another table though.
IX. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
- BEIMER - He stated that Manny Perez is supposed to be on the
Traffic & Parking Commission but he hasn't attended two meetings.
Board Member Beimer asked Ms. Carrillo if there is anything planned
for the zooq Veterans Day Program. She stated that there is nothing
planned yet. Board Member Beimer suggested getting women to put
on the Veterans Day Program this year.
