Virtual Presentation to Discuss the Congo and Lt. Emory Taunt
Leesburg, VA (April 15, 2022) – Andrew Jampoler will
present his virtual lecture, “Congo: The Miserable
Expeditions and Dreadful Death of Lt. Emory Taunt, USN,” on
Wednesday, April 27, beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
As the first resident American diplomat in equatorial Africa,
former Navy Lieutenant Emory Taunt’s third time in the
Congo ended in January 1891 with his death along the great
river—the familiar fate of many Europeans in King Leop old’s
private estate. Emory’s life and times at the end of the 19 th
century open a window today on the tragic history of this
deeply troubled nation.
Pre-registration is required for this event. Please call 703-737-7195,
email balchlib@leesburgva.gov, or register online.
Andrew Jampoler is an alumnus of Columbia College and the School of International and Public
Affairs, both of Columbia University in New York City, and of the US State Department Foreign
Service Institute’s School of Language Study. While in the US Navy, Jampoler, a naval aviator
who flew Lockheed P-3 airplanes in search of submarines, also commanded a land-based
maritime patrol aircraft squadron and an air station. Jampoler has been researching and writing
non-fiction books for more than twenty years.
