Araujo and seconded by Vice Chairperson Jaimes.
Review of March 2009 Event on Domestic Violence:
Chairperson Rodriguez asked for a discussion on the Women's Power Half Hour event for
Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Commissioner Araujo stated that the Commission needs to know if
Ms. Alderete received permission to show the DVD on domestic violence. She stated $2,500 to
perform a play was too expensive. Commissioner Araujo mentioned that Ms. Alderete said, she
would get back with the Commissioners and let them know if permission was given to her to show
the DVD "Flower's Aren't Enough," on domestic violence. Commissioner Herron asked if Ms.
Alderete selected a date for the event. She stated that Ms. Alderete was supposed to call the
Commissioners to let them know the date on the same day of the Women's Commission meeting.
Commissioner Herron also stated that she never received a call from Ms. Alderete.
Mr. Goodloe stated that the date for the Women's Power Half Hour event will be held on
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Bateman Hall in room# 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Ms.
Coulson-Johnson stated that the event will start at 10:00 a.m. She stated that Ms. Alderete asked
her to schedule room #1 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in order to give the Commissioners enough
time to set up for the event. She also stated that room #1's occupancy is for 100 people with
chairs only. If the set up included tables and chairs, the occupancy is for 70 people. Vice
Chairperson Jaimes asked how many guest will be invited.
Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that Lucy Avalos will donate the food for the Women's Power Half
Hour breakfast. She stated that Lucy Avalos will also donate food for the following Women Power
Half Hour events. Chairperson Rodriguez asked how many more events are we scheduled to
have this year. Commissioner Herron stated that we're scheduled to have (3) three more
Women's Power Half Hour events. She stated that we are having one in June, September and
December. Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that if Lucy Avalos doesn't donate food for all (4) four
events, she will request donations from Home Town Buffet.
Commissioner Herron suggested setting up the room with tables and chairs if they are going to
have breakfast. She also stated that they need to let Bateman Hall know what the set up
arrangement will be. The Commissioners agreed on setting up the room for 70 people with tables
and chairs. Chairperson Rodriguez asked if we are going to invite the public or just women in the
community. Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that they should invite women in the community.
She also stated that she will go to Lynwood Adult School and pass out fliers.
Commissioner Araujo suggested passing out fliers at the Elementary schools. She suggested
asking the schools to select (3) three parents from their Advisory Group to attend the breakfast.
She stated that all the Elementary schools have an Advisory Group. She stated that the schools
have groups like AC, DAC and BDAC. Commissioner Araujo suggested maybe these groups
could select their Chairperson and Vice Chairperson to come and attend the event and take
information back to their schools. Chairperson Rodriguez stated that is a good idea, because we
would like for everyone to benefit from the information that they receive.
Commissioner Araujo mentioned that each school has a community liaison that deals directly with
the community. She stated that they know which parents are having problems in their homes.
She also suggested giving fliers to the Community Aids to pass out to the parents. She stated
that maybe the Community Aids Chairperson and Vice Chairperson could come to the event and
get information and take it to their school sites. Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that domestic
violence affects all ethnic groups. Commissioner Araujo stated that many women don't know that
there is already a law against domestic violence.
Chairperson Rodriguez suggested that each Commissioner be responsible for inviting 16 guests.
She too suggested taking fliers to Elementary schools. Commissioner Herron stated that each
Commissioner will be responsible for inviting 14 guests, not 16. Commissioner Herron stated that
she will not invite guests from the schools. She stated that they should have a variety of guests
from the community. Commissioner Araujo agreed that a variety of guest is a good idea.
Vice Chairperson Jaimes asked staff for fliers so that the Commissioners can begin distributing
them. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that staff is working on the flier. Mr. Goodloe stated that he
has a draft of the flier. He stated that staff will have it ready for the Commissioners to distribute
sometime this week. Commissioner Araujo asked to see the flier. Vice Chairperson Jaimes
suggested having an interpreter for the women who can not speak English. Chairperson
2
Rodriguez asked if the DVD is only in English. Commissioner Herron answered yes. Chairperson
Rodriguez asked does the City have a translating system. Ms. Coulson-Johnson answered yes,
but we will have to request the system from the Human Resources Department.
Commissioner Araujo stated that there is a cost if we use an interpreter to translate. Vice
Chairperson Jaimes stated that she or Chairperson Rodriguez will do the translating. She stated
that this way they will not have to pay anyone to translate. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that she
will call Human Resources Department today to see if the system will be available for the event on
March 25, 2009. She stated that once she finds out, she will let Mr. Goodloe know and he will call
the Chairperson Rodriguez and relate the information to her.
Commissioner Araujo suggested again asking Ms. Alderete to contact the County to see if she
could get information on domestic violence for the event.
Chairperson Rodriguez stated that the event is on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Bateman Hall,
in room #1 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. She stated that the breakfast will be donated by Lucy
Avalos. A motion was made by Commissioner Araujo to approve the event for Wednesday,
March 25, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and for Lucy Avalos to provide the breakfast for
the event and seconded by Commissioner Herron.
Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that she thinks the DVD might be an hour long, because Ms.
Alderete suggested that staff meet with her to preview the DVD. She stated that Ms. Alderete did
not think we needed to show the entire DVD, because the presentation will be only 30 minutes.
Commissioner Araujo made a motion to give staff permission to edit the DVD to accommodate the
hour of the event and seconded by Commissioner Herron.
Letter from Assemblyman Hector De La Torre's office:
Chairperson Rodriguez asked for a discussion about the letter received by Ms. Alderete from
Assemblyman Hector De La Torre's office regarding "2009 Women of the Year" nomination
request. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that she was instructed by Ms. Alderete to place this item
on the agenda for information only. She stated because the deadline date February 24, 2009
would have passed by the time the Women's Commission meeting took place in March.
Commissioner Araujo motioned that they receive the letter of the "2009 Women of the Year"
nominee that was sent from Assemblyman Hector De La Torre's office for information only,
seconded by Commissioner Herron.
Board Orals:
Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that someone needs to open up with a summary of what the DVD
is about before showing it, and also someone to close after the DVD is completed. Commissioner
Araujo asked if Ms. Alderete has a speaker for the event. Commissioner Araujo stated that they
have already discussed and agreed not to have the performer come and do the play, because the
cost of $2,500 is too expensive. Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that she is not asking for anyone
to come and perform the play. She stated that she is just asking for someone to open with a
3
summary pertaining to the information on the DVD and close with remarks regarding domestic
violence after the DVD is complete. Vice Chairperson Jaimes stated that they need someone to
do the welcome and thank the guests for attending the event. She suggested either Ms. Alderete
or Chairperson Rodriguez open and close with remarks.
Ms. Coulson-Johnson informed the Commissioners that Ms. Alderete will be off work for (4) four
weeks and that Mr. Goodloe is taking her place until she returns. Commissioner Araujo asked
Mr. Goodloe if he could contact the County to see if they will provide him with information and
resources on domestic violence for the event. Commission Araujo stated that Lt. Rivas from the
Sheriff's department should be able to get someone to speak and they could open and close on
the topic.
Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that Ms. Alderete said that she spoke with Lt. Rivas and he told her
that he will get someone to attend the event. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that she spoke with
Vannessa Robinson from the YWCA and asked if she or someone from her office could attend the
event and bring information that they might have pertaining to domestic violence. Ms. Robinson
requested a flier and said she will let us know if someone will be able to attend and bring
information and resources.
Commissioner Araujo stated that someone from the Sheriff's department would be good, because
there is a lot domestic violence going on right now. Chairperson Rodriguez asked Mr. Goodloe if
she could meet with him on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week to go over the agenda for the
Women's Power Half Hour event. She stated that she would like to get everything finalized.
Public Orals:
No Public Orals.
Chairperson Rodriguez asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Araujo made a
motion to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Commissioner Herron. The meeting adjourned at
10:40 a.m.
