Town of Truckee
Kelly & I wish to express our support of the Planning Commission and their rejection of Tahoe Donner’s
Proposed Improvements to the Tahoe Donner Marina.
I served on the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors for 10 of the past 12 years. I believe that an expanded deck with a
wind screen, fire pits and additional lighting can be only for one purpose: to extend the hours of usage at the Marina
and/or to promote special events such as weddings, receptions or parties. A large patio or deck area with lighting and
fire pit(s) would also lend itself to a music venue.
The Marina was intended to be a recreational venue for Tahoe Donner homeowners for boating, swimming, fishing
(including crawdads) and barbeques. While past practices have included the Cardboard Regatta (mostly employees),
The Luau and The Treasure Hunt have been enjoyed by Tahoe Donner homeowners but we are very concerned that this
expansion will lead to an expansion of these events. Over the years, we have lost 20% to 25% of the sandy beach to
expanded storage of paddleboats, canoes, kayaks and catamarans plus two storage buildings. While providing this
option for the homeowners, it also expands revenue production for the association.
The continued use of the Marina as a wedding venue was a part of the original Marina Improvement Plan which
included a wedding pavilion on the upper lawn area and a cabana bar on the sand area. The Tahoe Donner Board of
Directors, at that time, wisely removed those elements of the Plan. We do not see the Marina Expansion Project as
supporting recreation but more as another opportunity to enhance revenue at an already crowded and successful
amenity.
Since 1989, we have been using the Marina as a place to swim, fish for crawdads and barbeque. Now that our children
are grown, we barbecue weekly during the summer at the Marina with a group of 6 – 18 friends with their children and
grandchildren. Many summer nights the Tahoe Donner Marina Parking Lot is posted as “full” requiring parking on
Donner Pass Road or circling to wait for a parking space. Crawdads, however, are still a big part of the experience.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
