The QIP is less than ¼ mile from the Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks District Community
Art Center located at 10046 Church Street. Facilites at this location include: Asphalted Play
Area, Tiny Tots Area, Playground, Classrooms/Meeting Rooms, Auditorium with Stage,
Kitchen, Small Leisure Park.

The QIP is a rural project located less than 2 miles from an employment center with more than

With the opening of the new Community Recreation Center in
December of 2009, the existing Community Center, located at
10046 Church Street in Truckee, is becoming the Community Arts Center. Future plans include building
a theatre in place of the current gym and creating arts, music and drama classes for the community. Call

SASSARINI HOME – Built circa 1895 by the Sassarini family,this
home was later purchased by the McGwinn Family on July 15,1918 for 10 dollars
in gold coin.Doyle McGwinn grew up to be the town butcher for many years.
TITUS HOME –This home was constructed circa 1912 on a spot
previously occupied by a Chinese boarding house.It was the only architectural-
ly designed home in Brickelltown,designed by Will Bliss.Frank Titus,Sr.built
this home while working as an engineer on the narrow gauge railroad,which
hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Truckee.
EATON HOMES – Originally built by Edward Brickell circa 1880 and
then served as the Truckee Lumber Company store.Harry Eaton,Brickell’s son
in law,was a longtime railroad engineer.His son,Harry,grew up in this home
and in the 1930’s he was known to ski to Tahoe City to deliver the mail when
trains were snowbound in Truckee.
THE KRUGER C.B. WHITE HOUSE – Placed on the National
Register of Histor ic Places,it was built in 1873 by W.H.Kruger,an original
owner of the Truckee Lumber Company.In 1904,C.B.White,a banker and
prominent citizen,bought the house.
RICHARDSON HOUSE – Warren Richardson built this beautiful
Victorian home in 1887.The home stayed in the family until 1940.Since then,
the house was used as a boarding house and was to become known in town as
“the flop house”.In 1981,the house was transfor med into a bed and breakfast.
ROCKING STONE – Although the 17-ton stone no longer rocks,it
is one of 25 known rocking stones in the world.The local Native Americans
used this rock for drying their food and holding ceremonies as far back as 15,000
years ago.One of the early tribes painstakingly chipped away the rock to flatten
the top and curve the bottom so animals couldn’t climb up to eat their food.
THE LOADING DOCK – Once a loading dock and freight
station for the Souther n Pacific Railroad this building served as a warehouse for
years.Much of Truckee’s lumber and ice were shipped from here.
TRUCKEE’S OLD JAIL – Built in 1875 out of native stone,the
br ick was added in 1901.This is one of the West’s oldest jails in continuous use
until 1964.Open on summer weekends.
FIRST AND LAST CHANCE SALOON – It was the last saloon
heading west and the first heading east;once Truckee’s original telephone office.
FLYING “A”– This was a fully working gas station when it opened in
the 1936.In 2007,it was revitalized to appear as a 1949 gas station.
SIERRA TAVERN BUILDING – Built as a three-story building in
1928.A fourth floor was added in 1938.This was once the location of the law
office of Truckee’s famous citizen,Charles McGlashan,who wrote the history
of the Donner Party.
CABONA’S – Founded in 1918,Cabona’s is the oldest retail establish-
ment on Commercial Row.It’s founder,Dave Cabona,originally sold fishing
tackle,appliances and general merchandise.The eastern part of the store was a
coffee shop.The coffee cup is still embedded in the sidewalk.
THE DEPOT – The depot was built in 1900.A plaque,located on the
large stone outside the depot,commemorates the first transcontinental railroad
line.The line reached Truckee on April 3,1868.
THE CAPITOL – Built in 1872 by William Hurd.It was originally
“Hurd’s Saloon and Hall.”It was used by Piper Opera Company and then for
the County Cour t.
I.O.O.F. HALL – This building was built in 1871 and is the oldest on
the block.Rebekah officials from New York had been in San Francisco to
organize a lodge there.Returning to New York they became snowbound and
stayed in Truckee four days.They asked the local ladies if they would like to
have a lodge;the second Rebekah Lodge in Califor nia was established.
REX HOTEL BUILDING – Built over 100 years ago,it was converted
to a hotel with steam heated rooms in 1913.Dur ing prohibition,the lower
floor was a speakeasy called the “Silver Mirror.”
SQUEEZE IN – The location of the town’s first bank,operated by
Frank Burckhalter.In 1869 a daring bank robbery attempt was thwarted by the
heroic action of bank employees and town citizens.
STONE GARAGE – This building is on the location of Truckee’s first
building:Gray’s Station.The cur rent stone building was constructed around
1911 and served as a car r iage house and blacksmith shop.
THE TRUCKEE HOTEL – Built as the American Hotel in 1873,it
has had several name changes since.In 1909,it burned to the ground and was
rebuilt.It was renamed Alpine Riverside Hotel for the 1960 Winter Olympics.
The hotel was renovated and reopened as the Truckee Hotel in 1977.
THE SCHAFFER HOUSE – Built in 1895 by George Schaffer,the
founder of Truckee’s first lumber mill,Schaffer Mill.The-original Italianate
detailing is still evident on the porch.
GRAY’S LOG WAYSTATION – Truckee’s oldest building (1863).In
1909 the cabin was given to the Native Sons of the Golden West,Donner Parlor
No.162,who moved it to its present location.
CHINESE HERB SHOP – Built in 1878,it was the cornerstone of
Truckee’s Chinatown,the second largest Chinese community on the west
coast,and home of the Donner Soda Label,part of the Truckee Soda Works.
