HomeMy Public PortalAboutORD16171BILL NO. 2021-046 SPONSORED BY Councilmember Kemna ORDINANCE NO. /& 171 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, APPROVING THE CONVEYANCE OF EAST MILLER PARK FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE NATIONAL CEMETERY IN JEFFERSON CITY. WHEREAS, the Jefferson City National Cemetery was officially established in 1867 and has served as a burial ground for veterans of the United States armed forces since 1861, totaling 1,792 interments; and WHEREAS, spanning over two acres, the Jefferson City National Cemetery has been closed to new interments for decades, and there is no other burial ground dedicated to United States veterans in the Jefferson City area; and WHEREAS, the City of Jefferson in the care of the Parks and Recreation Commission owns East Miller Park, consisting of approximately 2.5 acres of land abutting the National Cemetery potentially suitable for expanding the Jefferson City National Cemetery to allow new interments of United States veterans; and WHEREAS, at the City of Jefferson Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on February 11, 2020, the Commission passed a motion to approve the transfer of East Miller Park for the expansion of the Jefferson City National Cemetery. NOW BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The City of Jefferson's City Council supports and approves the conveyance of approximately 2.5 acres of East Miller Park abutting the Jefferson City National Cemetery to the Veteran's Administration or other appropriate federal agency for the purposes of expanding the Jefferson City National Cemetery. Section 2. This Ordinance and the approval set forth herein shall expire two years after its adoption by the City Council if the land contemplated herein is not conveyed to the Veteran's Administration or other appropriate federal agency within such two years. Section 3.
