MEETING MINUTES
JULY z3, 2007
I. CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson John Beimer called the Veterans
Affairs Council meeting to order at 5:06 p.m.
II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood led the Invocation.
III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Julio Mendoza led the
Pledge of Allegiance.

V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City
Clerk for the July meeting.
VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimer motions that the
minutes for June zoo? be approved. Board Member Wood motions
that the minutes be approved. Board Member Mendoza seconds the
motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes
and the motion is passed.
VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: The Board Members discussed the fact
that Los Angeles County will run the upcoming Lynwood election.
Board Member Wood announced that Leo Rodriguez former
Recreation Superintendent II for the Sports Division is running for
City Council in the City of Montebello. Board Member Mendoza
stated that Lynwood City Council Members will be going to court in
August to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. Veterans Memorial Update - Board Member Wood requests that
this matter be pushed through as soon as possible. If we want this
resolved by November it's not too soon to be pushing. Mr. Gus
Hernandez stated that Mr. Trejo hasn't mentioned anything to him
about a Veterans Memorial Monument. Board Member Wood stated
that nothing too fancy is required and no mention of Council is
necessary. Board Member Wood stated that he would contact Mr.
Trejo; we can't move forward until we know current status. Board
IX. SCHEDULED MATTERS: Continued
Member Mendoza stated that we need a special meeting for the
Memorial Monument design in order to vote on it. Board Member
Wood stated that we have to select the wording for the monument.
He also stated that Mr. Trejo needs to push this item through to
Council. The Board Members must pick a final design in August, put
on Agenda in September and work on the project in October.
X. PUBLIC ORALS: Gus Hernandez introduces himself to the Board
Members. There will be a Girl's Softball Tournament on July z8 and
July z9 in Lynwood City Park starting at g:oo a.m. Teams from as far
away as Santa Rosa are expected to participate in the Tournament.
Mr. Hernandez was commended by Board Member Wood for doing a
fine job on field prep.
X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
- WOOD -Board Member Wood stated that players z4 and under
will be a travel team for Lynwood. They are slowly progressing in
their skills. He stated that he isn't coaching but keeping score.
- FORD -Absent
- PEREZ -Absent
- CALDERON - No comment.
- MENDOZA -Board Member Mendoza stated that his niece began
playing softball at age seven. She graduated from Ohio State
University in zoo6 on an athletic scholarship. Board Member
Mendoza's niece played softball for four years. He stated that he
would travel to see a Lynwood team play elsewhere.
- WILLIAMS -Absent
- BEIMER -Chairperson Beimer asked Board Member Mendoza
about his niece.
XI. ADJOURNMENT -The meeting was adjourned at 6:0o p.m. The
next scheduled meeting will be held at 5:0o p.m. on Monday, August
z7, zoo7 in the Lynwood City Hall Council Chambers.
