MEETING MINUTES
MARCH z6, 2007
I. CALL TO ORDER: Board Member Wood called the Veterans
Affairs Council meeting to order at 5:i7 p.m.
II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood led the Invocation.
III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Mendoza led the
Pledge of Allegiance.

V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City
Clerk for the March meeting.
VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Board Member Wood motions that the
minutes for February zoo? be approved. Board Member Mendoza
seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of
the minutes.
VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: See Public Orals Below
VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. VETERANS DAY PLANNING -The Veterans Day Ceremony
is scheduled for Thursday, ii/8/o7. A professional Color Guard will
be used for the flag presentation. The Young Marines, headed by
Daniel Gutierrez are to perform a drill for the event. White crosses
are to be placed on the front lawn of City Hall to represent fallen
soldiers. Board Member Mendoza asked Mr. Trejo what it would cost
to incorporate a memorial plaque honoring the five branches of the
military. Board Member Wood had previously provided a copy of a
design that could be used for the plaque. He can provide it again if
necessary. The Marketing Department should be able to assist in this
matter. Mr. Trejo said that he will work on this for the Veterans
Affairs Council. Mr. Trejo stated he would have a response for the
May meeting.
IX. PUBLIC ORALS: Mr. Jose Trejo, Interim Deputy Director
introduced himself to the Board Members. He is temporarily assigned
to take Art Hernandez's position as the Veterans Affairs Council staff
liaison. Mr. Hernandez recently resigned from his position as Interim
Recreation Superintendent II.
Mr. Trejo invited the Board Members to the following upcoming
events:
^ Youth Baseball Opening Day - 3/3i/o7 -Lynwood City Park,
q a.m.
^ Teen Transit Square Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony - 3/3t/o7,
io:3o a.m. -The improvements include a trolley stop, clock
tower, and new sidewalks. The Project Manager and County
personnel will be on hand to say a few words.
^ Senior's Easter Program - 4/5/07 - CTC, Senior Lounge, r p.m.
to z:3o p.m.
^ Annual Citywide Easter Egg Hunt - 4/7/07 -Lynwood City
Park, Diamond #3 - Mr. Trejo commented that Chairperson
Beimer and Board Member Mendoza usually attend this event.
X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
- WOOD -Suggests that Media Services put information in the
Lynwood `N Perspective newsletter and local paper, actively
seeking new membership for the Veterans Affairs Council.
Lynwood used to have an American Legion and VFW Post. Most
Lynwood members went to Hollydale. Board Member Perez goes
to South Gate. Board Member Wood stated that he has invited
several Veterans to meetings. They come to a couple of meetings
and then stop attending.
- FORD - No comment
- PEREZ - No comment
- CALDERON - He stated that he was just released from the
hospital at 2 p.m. today. He was admitted with chest pains.
- MENDOZA - He stated that he plans to visit Chairperson
Beimer. Chairperson Beimer was removed from the Traffic &
Parking Commission recently. Board Member Mendoza stated
that it's hard for Chairperson Beimer to get in/out of his vehicle as
his hip is still mending. Board Member Wood requests that Board
Member Mendoza convey everyone's concern for Chairperson
Beimer's health. Member Mendoza commented that it would be a
different environment if we had an American Legion. The City of
Lynwood used to have many service clubs and only the Rotary
Club is still around.

XI. ADJOURNMENT -The meeting was adjourned at 6:0o p.m. The
next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 5:0o p.m. on Monday,
April z3, zoo7.
