ON MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2007. CITY OF LYNWOOD VETERANS AFFAIRS COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES JANUARY zz, 2007 I. CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson John Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council meeting to order at 5:07 p.m. II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood led the Invocation. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Mendoza led the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. ROLL CALL: CHAIRPERSON BEIMER -Present BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA-Present BOARD MEMBER WOOD -Present BOARD MEMBER PEREZ -Absent BOARD MEMBER FORD -Present BOARD MEMBER CALDERON -Absent BOARD MEMBER WILLIAMS -Absent V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City Clerk for the January meeting. VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimer requests a vote on the minutes for November zoo6. Board Member Mendoza motions that the minutes be approved. Board Member Wood seconds the motion with one correction. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes. VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: Board Member Wood handed out a newspaper article on accessing military records via the Internet. VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: A. DECISION ON VETERANS AFFAIRS MEETING FOR MAY zoo? -The May zoo? meeting of the Veterans Affairs Council is scheduled to be held on 5/z8/o7. That day is Memorial Day and a City Holiday. The Board Members discussed whether to reschedule the meeting date to 5/zi/o7 or to cancel the meeting altogether. Board Member Wood calls for the question; Board Member Mendoza motions that the meeting be rescheduled to 5/zI/o7 and Board Member Ford seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously to reschedule the meeting to 5/zt/o7. B. zoo? VETERANS DAY PLANNING -The current budget is $500.00. Art has requested $z,5oo for this year's Veterans Day Ceremony. Some of the money will be used to purchase crosses to display on the front lawn at City Hall and to hire a professional Color Guard. Schools will be asked to provide wreaths for the ceremony. Chairperson Beimer requests a motion to proceed with zoo? Veterans Day plans as discussed. Board Member Mendoza makes a motion; Board Member Ford seconds the motion and the motion is passed. Board Member Mendoza stated that we need to recruit young veterans. Board Member Wood suggested that we advertise in the Lynwood `n Perspective again. Board Member Mendoza stated that this community is losing all of its service clubs. The only active club remaining is the Rotary Club. Chairperson Beimer is the only Veteran in the Rotary Club. It was noted that the Lynwood `n Perspective newspaper ran an article on the Veterans Day Ceremony and Board Member Mendoza was featured in two of the photos accompanying the article. Mr. Hernandez stated that he was in Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day. He didn't see much commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day; no parade or large crowds. He did notice a large number of Japanese businesses and tourists. Board Member Wood stated that the military does hold large events to commemorate this day. He stated that he receives the Navy Times and they said that December's event would be the last since most WWII Veterans have passed away or are very elderly. He also stated that Veterans that lost their lives at Pearl Harbor during WWII may be buried there. Board Member Wood also stated that there is a National cemetery on Oahu Island where many white crosses are displayed. IX. PUBLIC ORALS: None X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: - WOOD - Attended a memorial service and ran into the person that assisted in bringing the Veterans Moving Wall to the City of Lynwood. The rep stated that Lynwood had the best set-up of the Wall than every other city he has worked with. Lately he has been working with the City of Torrance. - FORD - No comment - PEREZ -Absent - CALDERON - Absent - MENDOZA - No comment - WILLIAMS -Absent - BEIMER - No comment XI.
