CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson John Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council meeting to order at 5:07 p.m. II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood led the Invocation. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Ford led the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. ROLL CALL: CHAIRPERSON BEIMER -Present BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA-Absent BOARD MEMBER WOOD -Presenc BOARD MEMBER PEREZ -Absent BOARD MEMBER FORD -Presenc BOARD MEMBER CALDERON -Absent BOARD MEMBER WILLIAMS -Absent V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City Clerk for the November zoo6 meeting. VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimer requests a vote on the minutes for October zoo6. Board Member Wood motions that the minutes be approved. Board Member Ford seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes. VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: None VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: A. VETERANS DAY CEREMONY REVIEW - Mr. Art Hernandez, Interim Recreation Superintendent II remarked that the City Manager, Mr. N. Enrique Martinez, was very pleased and thoroughly enjoyed the Veterans Day Ceremony. He himself is a Veteran. Mr. Martinez commented that the ceremony was short and to the point. He requested that next year actual soldiers should be used for the flag ceremony. The Young Marines can still be in the program. The event was held on Thursday, November 9, zoo6 at io:oo a.m. on the front lawn at City Hall. The usual wreath ceremony and color guard flag display were presented. The first Lynwood casualty in the Vietnam War, the late Richard A. Schmitz, was honored by his niece, Lori Stuart. The highlight of the event was the heartfelt reading of a letter by Ms. Stuart written by one of Mr. Schmitz's comrades in the war. Ms. Stuart had a great day in Lynwood. She visited the house where she grew up on Tecumseh Avenue and picked avocados from a tree her Dad planted when they lived there. Mr. Hernandez is to provide her with a copy of a DVD of a previous City of Lynwood Veterans Day Ceremony featuring the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Wall. Mr. Hernandez stated that next year he plans to request that each participating school supply a wreath and a student body representative. He also plans to line the front lawn of City Hall with white crosses in the days leading up to Veterans Day; hopefully this will attract attention and a larger audience to the event. Chairperson Beimer stated that he was surprised that Board Member Frank Calderon did not show up for the ceremony as he was supposed to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. B. CHRISTMAS PARADE -Chairperson Beimer asked Board Member Wood if he would be participating in the Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade. Board Member Wood replied that he would not. Mr. Hernandez stated that he watches the parade at the finish point in order to handle crowd control. Mr. Weird Al Yancovich, a '76 graduate of Lynwood High School will be the Grand Marshall of this year's parade. Weird Al's grandmother lived on Burton in Lynwood. Chairperson Beimer commented that the Rotary Club will have a float in the Christmas parade and the Rotatry Club President will ride in a car. IX. PUBLIC ORALS: None X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: - WOOD - No comment - FORD - No comment - PEREZ -Absent - CALDERON - Absent - MENDOZA - Absent - WILLIAMS -Absent - BEIMER - He stated that the Commission should make a New Year resolution to revive interest and membership in the Veterans Affairs Council. City of Lynwood employee Velma Winbush has expressed an interest in returning to the Council. - Art Hernandez -Commented that forty parking spaces will be added to the Senior Center. XI.
