SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Police Department currently
has ten (10) handheld radios and thirteen (13) in-car radios. The hand-helds are five years old and are literally falling apart. In many cases the detachable microphones must be taped
with electrical tape to stay connected. The car-mounted radios are old and were not designed for use over 3-5 years; in some cases they are ten years old. Some of the problems include
frequency drift, inability to scan, buttons falling off, receiving but not transmitting, and microphones failing. This is the officers “life-line” and should not be jeopardized. Furthermore,
we currently have no way of communicating with many of the other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in our area as their systems are VHF and we transmit on UHF. We are
requesting the purchase of new VHF/UHF radios through the Motorola Lease/Purchase Program, which would enable us to own the radios after five years for $1.00 each.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the Lease Agreement with Motorola and authorize the Mayor to sign.
