SUMMARY
STATEMENT: We are working on the advertisement to replace Steve. My plan is to form a committee to assist me in the process. It will include members of the police department as well
as citizen representation. I would also like up to two members of the Council to assist. I anticipate a similar process to the one used to hire our Airport Manager: the applications
of the qualified candidates would go to the committee and they would narrow the field to perhaps three finalists. Those would be interviewed jointly by me and the members of the committee,
the Council participation would include the selection of the finalists but not the interview and recommendation part of the process because the Council ultimately affirms the City Manager’s
appointment of a department head. Following the interview process, the committee would make a recommendation to me, I would make the selection and present it to Council for their affirmation.
This would be consistent with our policy manual, City Code, and our desire to involve the community in important decisions.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Endorse the City Manager’s concept
as outlined above and designate up to two members of the City Council to participate in the process.
