Chairperson Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:05 P.M.

Chairperson Lewis asked members to review the minutes of the Februtu~y, March and April
meetings. Chairperson Lewis made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Commissioner
Herron noted that i^ the April 10 minutes, page 3, it should be corrected to read that Ethel
Pacheco led the Pledge of Alliance and Carol Reiss the invocation. Commissioner Araujo
questioned page 3 of the April 10`x' minutes and mention of her involvement in the newsletter.
She slated that she did not create the newsletter.
Chairperson Lewis opened die meeting for items of discussion. She mentioned the upcoming
nominations and the "Gifts of Love" program. Discussion followed on letters to request
donations of funds or toys for the "Gifts of Love" program. Laura Alderete asked Chairperson
Lewis if the Commission had a fundraising goal for Chis event Chairperson Lewis said that they
did not have a goal. Irene Garcia asked to open the discussion to include a goal. Lorene Reed
said it could be $5,000 and should be included in the request letter. Commissioner Herron
explained the number of children receiving gills in the past and the procedure for selection of
gifts. Commssioner Araujo suggested a possible goal of $1,000 cash and $2,000 value of
donations of toys. She furthered stressed that importaucc.of a goal Commissioner [Araujo made
a motion to have a goal of $2,500 value of toy donations and $2,000 in cash donations. Motion
was seconded by Conuirissioner Herron. The motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner I-Ierron stated that she needed to know if a special meeting of the Commission did
not include a stipend for attendance. Laura Alderete said that the City Commission stipend
budget was only for regular monthly meetings. Alderete further explained that in February the
Commission was behind u~ their planning for the Women's Month Luncheon and that a special
meeting was necessary to complete the plans for the event.

Laura Aldcrete passed out copies of the March 22, 2007 Women's Month Luncheon. She asked
members to initial the photos that they would like copied and that staff would send them copies.
Chairperson Lewis asked members if they had additional items for discussion. Commissioner
Herron mentioned the mentoring program for the school district Commissioner Araujo said that
she had not heard back from school officials and that the district was currently doing testing.
She explained the process of her involvement with the school district and said that she would Ly
to meet with them again prior to September 2007. Commissioner Plummer-Jones added insight
into school regulations regarding the fuhire mentoring program. Chairperson Lewis slated how
valuable Commissioner Plummer-Jones's experience in education was to this project Lorene
Reed said that the Commission needs a project and requested [hat the duties and responsibilities
of the Commission should be reviewed at the June meeting. Commissioner 1-lemon also would
like to review This at the next meeting.
Discussion followed concerning the elections to be held at Che June meeting. Laura Aldcrete
asked members to explain the process. Chairperson Lewis said that a new President and Vice
President ~u~e elected 15'om the members to serve for two-year terms. The process is done via
written votes collected and counted by staff. New officers are installed at the July meeting.
Adjournment Commissioner Araujo made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner
Pacheco. Motion approved. The meeting was adjourned at 3:55 p.m.

Chairperson Lewis asked member to review the minutes of the May meeting. Chairperson
motion to call meeting to order until correct minutes are printed. Chairperson Lewis called for
motion to approve minutes. Commissioner Pacheco motions to accept the minutes as read.
Commissioner Herron seconded the motion. Minutes approved.
Pearline Calderon told the Commission that she would like to apologize for the confusion ghoul
Che event for Older American's Month. She attended a Los Angeles County Supervisor's
meeting and ultcnded to give them the Cily atCendee list and did not relay the information.
Discussion followed on Chairperson Lewis's award for Older American's Month and the
handling of guests for the award event. Chairperson Lewis was awarded Che Older American
Award by the City of Los Angeles and the Women's Commissioners were not in attendance due
to lack of communication. The Commission would have liked to have attended in support oP
Chairperson Lewis.
Chairpeason Lewis moved to conduct the election for the Commission until next month due to
Che absence of one member, Margaret Aranjo. Commissioner Pacheco made a motion to hold
the election at the July meeting. Seconded by Commissioner Herron and passed unanimously.
Chairperson Lewis opened the meeting for items of discussion. Consnelo sent out letters for the
Gifts of Lovc toy drive to request donations in the form of money or toys. Pltmnin~ for this
event should be an agenda item in the near future.
Chairperson Lewis opened for discussion the Commission's Fall Festival; a health related event.
Commissioner Herron stated that the topics the Commission agreed on were obesity, colo^
cancer and stress.
Commissioner Lewis asked if there are any medical contacts that they can have at the fair and
stated that a mental health doctor would be appropriate. Lorene Reed, Friend suggested
contacting St. Francis Hospital for speakers. Commissioner Plummer-Jones will contact a
chiropractor Chat covers stress.
Laura Alderete, Staff Liaison asked what the purpose and format is for the event. Alderete asked
if the format is an open house, resource presentation Co the community, or awareness through
speakers. Commissioner Herron stated that in the past the format had been seminar format with
aClendees moving from seminar to seminar. Commissioner Plummer-Jones asked what the
turnout for this evenC has been in Che past year. Conunissioner Herron stated that the turn out last
year was about 200 people.
Chairperson Lewis stated that the each seminar lasted about 30 minutes and also included a
question and answer period at the end of the meeting. Commissioner Plummer-Jones suggested
havinff a panel to allow everyone to hear the presentations.
Chairperson Lewis asked members how ]oug each presenter should be allowed. Chairperson
Lewis suggested I S minutes with a brief 2 minute Q&A period. She stated that this evenC targets
the senior citizen population and takes place from 10 AM to 2 PM and includes lunch.
Laura Alderete, Staff Liaison asked what the topics will cover whether it be a specific population
or group within the larger topic. She explained that this would make the topics more interesting.
Chairperson Lewis stated that since Che commission caters to adults, the topics should be adult
related issues. Commissioner Herrou agreed. Lorene Reed, Friend suggested the commission
target women 21 and over.
Commissioner Plummer-Jones motions to have a panel of three experts speaking on the topics of
obesity, colon cancer and stress for the Women's Fall Festival. Commissioner Herron seconds.
Motion Approved. Laura asked that the commission refer any contacts for speakers to her or
Consuelo.
Announcements:
Phyllis Cooper-Lyons, City Staff has invited all commissioners to the Juneteenth Festival Caking
place at Lynwood Perk on Juue 23, ?007. She invited the Commission to set up a booth to give
information to the public. Phyllis Cooper-Lyons proceeded to hand out a flyer on the event
along with a flyer for the June 15, ?007, Juneteenth Celebration at the United Methodist Church,
located on C~uiin Avenue.
Commissioner Herron moved to adjourn meeting. Commissioner Pacheco seconded the motion.
