City of Lynwood Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday, April lo, 2007 3:00 P.M. City Council Chambers Call to Order: Chairperson Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:03 P.M. Pledge of Allegiance: Chairperson Lewis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call: Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis-Present Commissioner Dorothy Plummer-Jones Commissioner Ethel Pacheco-Present Commissioner Margaret Araujo-Present Commissioner Sylvia Herron-Present Certification of Agenda Posting: Agenda was duly posted. Also Present Lien Stringfield, Friend Lorene Reed, Friend Irene Garcia, Friend Paulette Bradley Delores Mathews, Friend Consuelo Marshall, filling in for Staff Liaison Natalia Medina, Block Watch Coordinator. Quality of Life Services Minutes of the February and March meeting were not available. Margaret Araujo made a motion, seconded by Ethel Pacheco to wait until the next meeting to approve the minutes of all three meetings. March 22, 2007 Women's Commission Luncheon: Chairperson Lewis opened the meeting for discussion. Commissioner Araujo stated that the purpose of the honoring women in the community should be the main focus of the event. Her commends included limited City Council involvement in the event. Commissioner Herron agreed with Commissioner Araujo's comments. She received negative comments on the luncheon specifically that the music was too loud and the choir's performance was not up to par. Chairperson Lewis stated that she had received only positive comments on the event. She thought that the honorees were appropriately honored. Commissioner Araujo repeated her words regarding her feeling that the luncheon should honor women in the community. Chairperson Lewis explained that the concept behind National Woman's Month and that it is to honor American women of exemplary distinction in their fields. She also mentioned that the Commission and Friends had agreed prior to the luncheon that the honorees would not speak al Lhe event. Lorene Rccd, Friend states each Commission has duties and responsibilities they should perform. Commissioners need to agree, take a vote and move on. The majority do not want to participate wish these young women. Commissioner Araujo slated that one of the honorees did speak at [he luncheon and that they all should have been given the same opportunity. Irene Garcia, Friend stated that she enjoyed the luncheon and suggested that honoree's bios he projected on the screens during the program. Commissioner Herron slated that the Commission did not approve the Honorable Mention category and that there was confusion about who was Lo do the Pledge of Alliance and the invocation. Laura Alderete did say that she would be the MC. Two years ago, she said, the entire program was done by Commission members and Friends, not staff. Chairperson Lewis stated that staff and City Council have not jurisdiction on the Commission. The Commission should just present their plans to them. No one called her about the program and she did call to get information. Chairperson Lewis said that she would not tell the City Council what to do. Commissioner Hen'o^ stated that City Council is not supposed to that over the program and that Marketing should lake care of this situation. Lorene Reed, Friend stated that Commissioners should let Marketing know how they feel about this issue. She then said that attendees at the luncheon seemed to really like Zelda Hutcherson's presentation. Discussion followed concerning two draft letters requesting donations of toys for the "Gifts of Love" program in December. Commissioner Herron stated that she did not like the letter with the word festive in it. Chairperson Lewis stated that the letters needed to be mailed so she requested that Commissioner Herron and Commissioner Pacheco should decide which version of the letter should be mailed. Chairperson Lewis reported that the elections for the Womcds Commission would take place at the end of the fiscal year, which is June 30th. It was agreed that the elections should take place at the June meeting. Chairperson Lewis asked staff for Lhe photographs taken at the luncheon. Staff said that they would be available at Lhe next meeting. Commissioner Plummer-Jones requested a list of Commission activities. Members and Friends responded by naming the activities. Discussion followed on past and possible future topics for the October Health Fair. 2 I,vnwood Women's Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday, April 10, 2007 Chairperson Lewis requested if anyone from Use public wished to spcxk to the Commission. Natalia Medina, Block Watch Coordinator came to t'he podium and spoke about Earth Day and the Film Festival featuring, An Inconvenient Trutft would be shown on April 20`~ at Lynwood High School and a Spring Clean Up of the City would also take place on Saturday, April 21, 2007. Paulette Bradley spoke about the Women's Luncheon. She requested that bios of honorees be listed in the program. She thought the food lines were loo long, but she said Lhal the food was good. She liked the variety in the program and Lhought Lhat the elected officials' presentations were inappropriate and took away fi'om the honorees. Bradley mentioned Thal last year the programs were on the table at the beginning of the event and suggested that members follow up with staff on progress with the programs. She suggested charging a fee to attend the luncheon. Lorene Rccd, Friend suggested that the Commission discuss the possibility of charging a fee for next year's luncheon. Chairperson Lewis discussed protocol and how the Commission should decide things as a Commission. For example, the newsletter that was done by Commissioner Araujo and she and the Commission knew nothing about it. Adjournment: Commissioner Plummer-Jones made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Herron. Motion approved. The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m. Marketing /Womnds Commission 2007/mailing minutes City of Lynwood Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday, February 13, 2007 3:00 P.M. City Council Chambers Call to Order: Chairperson Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:07 P.M. Pledge of Allegiance: Chairperson Lewis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Corrections were made on the January 2007 minutes; Pacheco/Herron approved t~s read after corrections. Laura Alderete, Marketing and Grants Management Manager Ms. Alderete suggested spending time on strategic plan that the Commission can report back to City Council on goals and objectives for the upcoming year. Some suggestions included to proactively ouCline a program for the fiscal year to include mentoring. It was suggested that the Commission be provided a brief education for a mentoring program. Ms. Alderete also clarified [hat the budget for the Commission is to pay for the monthly stipends and for the Minute's Clerk; not for events or fa' food. Friends of the Commission suggested that sponsorship, admission fees, and other fundraisers would help with generating more funds for the Commission. Chairperson Lewis suggested the same, particularly at entertainment events. It was suggested that a calendar oP events and objectives for Lhe year be published, but there are only 3 events headed by the Commission and funding of these events has never been an issue. Phyllis stated that she would present a calendar to Laura ~md that with the new direction of Lhe Commission under the Marketing and Grants Management Division, Lhere would be new objectives and goals. Commissioner Herron added that the three events are March 07 Women's History/Lynwood Women of the Year, October 07 Health Fair, December 2007 Gift of Love. Lynwood Women's Commission Statement Ms. Alderete addressed the tact that the mission statement wxs written in the 1980's and it should be changed especially in light of the fact that the City now has two women serving on the City Council. Commissioner Araujo expressed concern because she feels the Commission should do more for women by offering services, ouU~each, foster with women in the community, address teen challenges, etc. Chairperson Lewis mentioned mentoring at schools; many areas that are in need, such as, high school. Further, she said she would try to get an appointment with the Lynwood School District Superintendent, Mr. Craiger. Ms. Alderete suggested that the Commission schedule a three hour strategic planning session to identify the strengths/weakness and to better focus on goals and accomplishments. The Commissioners suggested the printing of a resource guide with information (Like phone number for women's shelter). Commissioner Herron pointed out that it would be good if people learned the language. She pointed out that Lynwood's population is 96 percent Hispanic with fifty percent not English speaking. Commissioners agreed to focus on what can be done rather than cannot be accomplished. They felt that the resource guide would be a good start. A special meeting will be held to plan women's history month on February 20, 2007, 10 a.m. VIP Room in Bateman Hall. Adjournment: 4 PM Lynwood Women's Commission Special Meeting Tuesday, February 20, 2007 10:00 a.m. Call to Order: Informal Meeting to discuss the luncheon-start time approximately 10:20 a.m. Attendance: Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis-Present Commissioner Ethel Pacheco-Present Staff Liaison Commissioner Sylvia Herron-Prescnt Friend Commissioner Maroarel Arxujo-Present No Agenda posted. Also Present: Lorene Recd, Friend Phyllis Cooper-Lyons, Vannessa Ross-Robinson, The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Annual Women's Commission Luncheon. Chairperson Lewis suggested spotlighting a doctor, teacher, nurse and student from the high school. Commissioner Herron slated that she has a bio and information for a teacher to be nominated. Liaison Lyons asked if the group wanted to spotlight someone from social services, as well. Commissioner Herron stated that Lhe commission usually has five categories of nominees. After discussion it was deLermincd and agreed that nominees would be women who live or work in [he City of Lynwood. Nominations will be opened up and publicized by Lhe Marketing and Grants Division. The deadline for nominations will be March I , 2007. The Women's Commission will review the Nominations and choose the finalists. The theme for this yew's lunch is "Women On The Move for 2007". Refreshments: Staff will review what was sewed over the pass 3-4 years and make suggeslionsh-ecommendations to the Commission. Keynote Speaker: Discussion was to look for someone who is motivational, talks on women's issues and who is current Staff will make recommendations for the Commission to review; keeping in mind costs and availability. Hood: Discussion on seeking donations from local vendors, such as, Hometown Buffet, Victor's, Plaza Mexico, KFC, etc. Keep in mind to not serve "Died foods" Lo seniors. Program: Staff would like to perso~alizc the program by having comments from each commissioner in two sentences "what does Women's History Month mean to you?° Advertising: Flyers for distribution to the community will be available by Monday, Februtuy 26, ?007. Decorations: The Lraditional colors are lavender and pink. Floral arrangements may act as centerpieces and can be given away as door prizes. Misc: Solicitation letters for the annual Gifts of Clv-istmas will he available no later than March 31, 2007. The letter will he reviewed by the Commission in the informal minutes of this meeting. The event is scheduled for the 2"~ Thursday in December (12/13/07). Meeting adjourned at 1 I:OS AM. City of Lynwood Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting Minutes 'Cuesday, March l3, 2(107 3:00 Y.M. City Council Chambers Call to Order: Chaiipe~son Lewis called the meeting to order a13:08 P.M. Pledge of Allegiance: Chairperson Lewis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the February meeting were not available for approval. Chairperson Lewis stated that she did not see the press release on the luncheon. She said Thal it did not start at noon. Phyllis Cooper- Lyons said that three speakers will be on the agenda for the luncheon. She went over the luncheon menu. Members favored cookies over cake. Phyllis gave out the names of Lynwood residents to be considered for awards al the luncheon: Olivia Solorzano, Dr. Hanan Isam, Effie Hicks, Betty Espeseth ,Pauline Galbriath, , Darrelyn Biddle. Laura Alderete mentioned that there arc four categories (community, church, government and education ) Discussion followed concerning the accomplishments of each nominee. ll was moved by Chairperson Lewis and seconded that nominations be closed at this time. Members mentioned that Che new member, Dorothy Plummer-Jones will he sworn in aL die luncheon. Discussion followed on the Women's Commission Luncheon program. StaPP and members discussed Lhe mission oP Lhe Commission and who gives the Pledge of Alliance. Commissioner 1-lerron will ask Carol Reiss to give the Pledge of Alliance and Commission Pacheco will give the invocation. Phyllis Cooper- Lyons mentioned that the members should attend the next City Council meeting on March 20°i at 5 PM to accept the proclamation for the Women's History Month. Phyllis Cooper- Lyons mentioned that the fist speaker will talk on "healthy lifestyles" and the second speaker will talk on care giving. Discussion followed on what time the luncheon will start It was agreed by all members that the luncheon will start at I I AM.
